‘Outer Banks’ Ends With One Last Shocking Reunion — The Pogues Return for Their Final Adventure, But One Fan-Favorite Is Missing
The Pogues have reached the end of the road.
After years of treasure hunts, betrayals, romances, near-death escapes and impossible odds, Outer Banks has officially closed the chapter on its story with Season 5. Netflix confirmed that the fifth season would be the series’ final installment, bringing John B, Sarah, Kiara, Pope, Cleo and Rafe into one last adventure.
For fans hoping that the final season would somehow reunite the original group exactly as they remembered it, however, there is one heartbreaking exception: JJ Maybank.
Rudy Pankow’s JJ does not return for Season 5. His character’s death at the end of Season 4 became one of the show’s most devastating turning points, fundamentally changing the dynamic between the remaining Pogues. The final season instead begins with the group dealing with JJ’s loss while pursuing the Blue Crown and seeking revenge against Chandler Groff.
That absence gives the final adventure a very different emotional weight.
Chase Stokes returns as John B, alongside Madelyn Cline as Sarah Cameron, Madison Bailey as Kiara Carrera, Jonathan Daviss as Pope Heyward and Carlacia Grant as Cleo. Drew Starkey also returns as Rafe Cameron, whose complicated relationship with the Pogues becomes another important part of the final chapter.
Rather than simply repeating the formula of earlier seasons, the final episodes focus heavily on consequences. The Pogues are no longer the same teenagers who began searching for treasure on Kildare Island. Their experiences have cost them friendships, family relationships and, most painfully, JJ.
The finale ultimately brings the story full circle. John B and Sarah marry and welcome a baby boy, while the remaining characters begin moving toward their own futures. Kiara finds a path connected to marine biology, Pope and Cleo rebuild their relationship, and Rafe’s story takes him far away from the Outer Banks.
One of the most emotional details is the name of John B and Sarah’s baby: JJ. The choice becomes a final tribute to the friend the Pogues lost, allowing his presence to remain part of their story even though Rudy Pankow does not physically return.
The real surprise, therefore, is not a secret Season 6.
It is the way Outer Banks chooses to say goodbye.
The cast’s final days on set were reportedly emotional, with the principal actors reflecting on the end of a journey that had lasted years. The final sequence brought several of the central stars together one last time, creating a genuine sense of closure both on screen and behind the scenes.
For viewers who have followed the Pogues since 2020, the ending represents more than another treasure hunt. It is the conclusion of a friendship story built around the idea that the group would always remain together — even when circumstances made that nearly impossible.
