An 18-year-old former student has been charged with murder and attempted murder following a deadly sword attack at a high school in central Sweden that left one teenage girl dead and three others injured.
The incident unfolded on the afternoon of 21 August 2026 at Brinellskolan in the town of Fagersta, a community of around 13,000 people located roughly 170 kilometres northwest of Stockholm. The school, which serves approximately 450 to 500 students aged 16 to 20, had only recently reopened after the summer break. For some pupils it was among their first days of the new term.
According to authorities, an 18-year-old man entered the school armed with a sword. He was dressed in black clothing, a helmet and a face covering. Police received the first emergency call at approximately 14:06 local time reporting ongoing violence. Officers arrived within minutes. By 14:16 the suspect had been subdued and detained after police used service weapons. The suspect was not injured in the confrontation.
A 17-year-old female student was killed. Two boys, aged 12 and 17, sustained serious injuries, with at least one requiring emergency surgery. A third person suffered minor injuries and was later discharged from hospital. The two seriously injured boys were reported to be in stable condition.
Prosecutors ordered the 18-year-old detained on suspicion of murder and several counts of attempted murder. On 23 August the Västmanland District Court remanded him in custody on probable cause. The investigation remains in an intensive early phase. Police have conducted dozens of interviews and plan to speak with nearly all students and staff. Two properties linked to the suspect were searched.
The suspect is a former student of the school and had previously been convicted of assault. Swedish media and police sources have noted he had prior involvement with youth care services. Investigators are examining a TikTok account that posted an image of a sword-like object shortly before the attack and contained references to previous acts of mass violence, including the 2015 Trollhättan school attack. Police are looking into possible connections to online communities that discuss or promote school-related violence. The motive remains under investigation and has not been publicly established.
The attack prompted an immediate lockdown at the school and nearby facilities. A temporary state of emergency was declared in the area before being lifted the following day. Flowers, candles and messages of condolence quickly appeared outside the school. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and opposition leader Magdalena Andersson visited the site the next morning to pay respects and meet with those affected. Political campaigning ahead of the September 2026 general election was temporarily paused by several party leaders.
Local health authorities and emergency services provided support to victims, families and the wider school community. The school remained cordoned off in the days that followed as forensic work and interviews continued.
