The 27th season of NBC’s hit series “The Voice” has three hopeful Texan constants remaining.
The eight-time Emmy-winning show is a singing competition where contestants battle it out for $100,000 and a recording contract with Universal Music Group.
The season features a panel of celebrities in their iconic red chairs: returning coaches Adam Levine, lead singer of Maroon 5 (who’s been on 16 seasons and mentored three winners); John Legend (10th season, one win); and Michael Bublé (second time on the show, one win); along with first-time coach Kelsea Ballerini.
The coaches search for the best singers in the nation, adding a contestant to their roster by turning their chair around during the initial performance. If multiple coaches turn, the contestant chooses whose team to join.
Each coach is allowed to steal one eliminated player and save one eliminated player.
This year’s superstar mentors include returning group Little Big Town (who appeared on Season 7 with Blake Shelton), helping Kelsea with her team, as well as newcomers Coco Jones (Grammy-winning singer and actress known for “Bel-Air”) assisting John’s team; Kate Hudson helping Adam’s team; and Cynthia Erivo (award-winning actress known for her role in “Wicked”) advising Michael’s team.
These contestants have made it through blind auditions and are now battling head-to-head for a spot to advance in the competition.
Carson Daly, the host, is the only original cast member who has appeared on every season.
On Team Kelsea, Hailey Wright has taken the stage by storm with her powerful voice and presence. She sang “Before the Next Teardrop Falls” by Freddy Fender during her blind audition. Michael and Kelsea both immediately turned their chairs.
During the battle round, Wright faced teammate Jaelen Johnston. Both are known for their country flair and performed “Neon Moon” by Brooks & Dunn. The 19-year-old from Redwater said her performance was for her mother, who has a rare form of blood cancer.
Bublé complimented her voice, saying she sounded just like country star Reba.
In the end, Hailey — one of the youngest competitors — lost the battle, but her coach saved her on day two of performances.
Olivia Kuper Harris brought the classic “Dream a Little Dream of Me” by Doris Day to life during her blind audition.
She got three of the four coaches to turn their chairs — John, Kelsea and Adam — and ultimately picked Legend as her coach.
Fun fact: Harris once sang at an Oscar party, where none other than Usher complimented her vocals. She also toured with Teddy Swims on his I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy tour.
The 34-year-old from Dallas went head-to-head with her teammate Nell Simmons.
Their duet was “Feel Like Making Love” by Roberta Flack. Coach John picked Olivia in the face-off as the winner of the battle.
Pastor’s son, quarterback, pitcher and center fielder Britton Moore has an exceptional tone and range that have made him a force to be reckoned with this season.
During the blind auditions, the 21-year-old from San Antonio sang “Yellow” by Coldplay, earning a four-chair turn. All the coaches wanted Moore on their team, and he ultimately chose Adam to be his coach.
He battled against Darius J, singing “Creep” by Radiohead on day one. It was a standout performance by both men. “Your voices are beautiful together,” mentor Hudson said during rehearsal. His coach chose Moore as the winner of the battle, advancing him to the next round.
With the battles over, that also means the coaches’ battle advisors — Hudson, Jones, Little Big Town and Erivo — are done helping the teams.
Don’t miss your chance to see if someone from the Lone Star State wins Season 27 of “The Voice.” New episodes air Monday nights, with next-day streaming on Peacock.
