X-Men ’97 Gets A Promising New Season 3 Update

Magneto, Cyclops and Rogue from X-Men '97 season 1

X-Men ’97 season 3 is going forward with a new direction as the Marvel animated series makes a new addition to the creative team. 2024 marked the return of one of Marvel’s most beloved animated properties of all time, as X-Men: The Animated Series became part of Marvel Studios’ slate of TV shows with the X-Men ’97 sequel series. While ending on a major cliffhanger, X-Men ’97 season 2 is confirmed to be happening, which will be followed by season 3 after being renewed early on.

After X-Men ‘97 showrunner Beau DeMayo’s departure ahead of the premiere of season 1, Marvel Studios and Disney+ have found their new head writer. According to a report from Deadline, Matthew Chauncey is set to take over for DeMayo as the head writer for X-Men ’97 season 3. At the time of this story’s publication, Disney+ and Marvel Studios have yet to comment on Chauncey’s hiring. No premiere date has been set yet for either X-Men ’97 seasons 2 or 3.

Why Matthew Chauncey Is A Promising Head Writer For X-Men ’97 Season 3

Chauncey boarding X-Men ’97 season 3 has a lot of promise, as the screenwriter is no stranger to the world of Marvel Studios. In the animation department, Chauncey worked on the Marvel Cinematic Universe TV show What If…?, writing multiple episodes in seasons 1 and 2 and being set to go on as head writer for season 3. Chauncey also has experience working with live-action properties within the MCU timeline, as he co-wrote three episodes of Ms. Marvel.

While time will tell how his approach will be with X-Men ’97 season 3, Deadline added that Chauncey will work with Jake Castorena, who is a surprising producer and the head director for the Marvel animated show. Even though details on X-Men ’97 season 2 are currently very limited, Deadline noted that scripts for the upcoming season have reportedly been “revised.” To what extent remains to be seen, but it is very likely to align more with the direction that Chauncey will have for X-Men ’97 going forward, allowing the two visions for the show to blend together.

It wouldn’t be shocking if new details on X-Men ’97 seasons 2 and 3 are revealed in a few weeks, as Marvel Studios is confirmed for San Diego Comic-Con 2024. At the very least, they may have at least some material to present for X-Men ’97 season 2, which has now been in production for quite a while. But until the next season arrives, the Marvel audience can relive every episode of X-Men ’97 season 1 on Disney+.
