Antony Starr plays Homelander in The Boys, a character based on DC Comics. However, he didn’t miss an opportunity to show his appreciation for Marvel Studios.
When discussing his favorite film, the actor singled out the first Avengers movie, 2012’s Marvel’s The Avengers. In the early 2010s, superheroes were wreaking havoc at the box office and the first team-up between Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Hulk, and Thor was iconic. “I love the first Avengers. The very first Avengers movie I thought that was excellent, there’s so many big stars in that franchise but I feel like the way it was spread across the story, the way they shot it and directed it, it was so well-balanced, because, you know, your tendency is to want to cut to Robert Downey Jr. at all times or Mark Ruffalo.”
“I always liked Batman,” Starr admitted about his favorite childhood superhero. “Yeah, but then I got older and I went ‘Actually, he’s just a dude.’ He’s just a guy with a butler and money and a few contraptions, but he’s not really, he’s not a superhero. He’s just a guy running around in a bat outfit, like with some fancy toys and a chip on his shoulder about money.” Starr couldn’t help but comment that “it’s going to be exciting to see what happens with the DC thing with James Gunn.”
Antony Starr Agrees With The Boys Ending With Season 5
Antony Starr has been acting for almost three decades but he earned worldwide recognition after he was cast as Homelander in the satirical superhero series The Boys. Created by Eric Kripke, the series premiered on Prime Video in 2019 and has just wrapped Season 4. Already renewed for Season 5, the upcoming season will also mark the show’s finale and Starr thinks it’s for the best.
“I’m very conscious that I want us to go out on a really positive, strong note,” Starr explained. “I don’t want us to be the show that pushed one season too far and fell flat. On behalf of everyone that works on the show, I think we deserve to go out with our heads up, not feeling like we should have gone earlier or we overstayed our welcome, so to speak. I think it’ll be about the right time, but also it’ll be a hard thing to leave.”
That doesn’t mean the ending doesn’t make him emotional. The actor agreed that it’s best to end the show on a high note but admitted, “If I stop to think about it, it’ll be really sad,” Starr explained. “It’s been such a long road with the show. We started before COVID, and we released Season 2 in COVID. We did all the press for that in seclusion and isolation in our homes, and then all of a sudden we came back. We shot in COVID. It’s been such a ride together with this group of people that it’ll be very sad. It’ll be a sad day to hang up the spandex.”
The first four seasons of The Boys are streaming on Prime Video.
