King Charles Breaks Down in Tears Reuniting with WWII Hero Who Moved Him Decades Ago—What Did the Veteran Whisper at Windsor?

KING Charles reunited with a veteran who made him cry as he and Prince William met WW2 heroes at Windsor Castle to mark Remembrance Day.

His Majesty and the future King greeted soldiers who served in the Pacific during World War Two in a reception held in their honour this evening.

King Charles met Gilbert Clarke, Sylvia Manasseh, Yavar Abbas, as well as Defence Secretary John Healey.

Yavar Abbas, who served as an officer in the Far East and witnessed the horrors of the atom bomb at Hiroshima, previously met His Majesty at a service to mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day in August.

The veteran’s speech about his experiences in the four-year battle against Japan and tribute to King Charles moved the Monarch to tears.

Mr Abbas told 1,500 guests gathered for the Royal British Legion service of remembrance: “I make no apology for briefly going off the script to salute my brave King who is here with his beloved Queen, in spite of the fact that he’s under treatment for cancer, an alien that I share with him.

“If it provides any comfort, of which I’ve been rid for the past 25 years and counting.

“I salute him for gracing this occasion, because by his presence here, he has gone a long way to make sure that his grandad’s 14th Army is never given the soubriquet again of a Forgotten Army.”

Mr Abbas kissed Camilla’s hand when she sat next to him for the group photo this evening, and later stood up to greet the King.

The two spoke before hugging, which sparked emotional reactions from the rest of the guests.

“I told him, ‘We can’t go on meeting like this’,” Mr Abbas told the PA news agency.

“I was very much looking forward to meeting him again.

“I have a lot of respect for His Majesty, not just as a monarch, but as a human being.

“It’s wonderful to meet him and to know that he is improving, because I had cancer and I got rid of it,” Mr Abbas added. “I’ve been rid of it for 15 years now.”

Originally from Lucknow in India, Mr Abbas was commissioned into the British Army in India in 1942 as a second lieutenant in the 11th Sikh Regiment.

He then trained as a combat cameraman and began documenting the war and its aftermath, from major battles in Burma to occupied Japan, including Hiroshima.

He went on to work as a filmmaker, and paid tribute to the journalists killed in Gaza amid the conflict with Israel.

“Whatever I did, it’s insignificant when I see what the men and women of Gaza have done for more than two years,” he said.

“They have been recording the genocide that has been visited upon them.”

When asked what message he wanted to pass down to future generations, he replied: “I am angry with the world and I am ashamed.
“I thought I fought a war to have a better world and I find that I am in a worse world than I was in at the time.”

“We are glorifying war,” he added. “At the drop of a hat, we begin a war.”

Charles, who is patron of the Royal British Legion, gave Mr Abbas a final hug before he left the reception.

Meanwhile, Prince William also spoke to several veterans including respected George Durrant, Ron Gumbley, and Henry Rice.

Earlier today, Wills told young people about the importance of wearing a red poppy and that “remembrance is for everyone” in a video message to mark the historic day.

The Prince of Wales’ heartfelt message was played out at the Royal British Legion’s Remembrance Assembly.

The virtual event brings together children aged 9-14 in schools, libraries, home education and other learning settings across the UK.

In his message, the prince said: “Armistice Day is an important time for us to stop and reflect – it is a reminder that remembrance is for everyone.

“When we remember, we connect with service in a personal way. We learn from the courage of others, and we carry their stories forward, so they are not forgotten.

“It’s not just about the past – it’s about shaping who we become in the future. Remembrance teaches us empathy, resilience and responsibility.

“And when we wear a red poppy or take a moment of silence, we are saying, ‘Thank you. We have not forgotten, and we will not forget’.”

The Prince of Wales added: “Even today, as we continue to face a number of conflicts across the world, we honour those who have gone before us, and those who are serving now.

“Their memories matter, their lives matter, and they remind us to be respectful, kind, brave and thoughtful every day.”

Prince William served in the Armed Forces full-time for seven and a half years before leaving in 2013.

Meanwhile, Queen Camilla was also seen shaking hands and smiling with those attending the royal event at Windsor tonight.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also attended the elegant reception.

Others present included Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch, Defence Secretary John Healey, and actor Sir Mark Rylance.

As the evening drew to a close, the King held the Commonwealth War Graves’ Torch for Peace, which was commissioned this year to symbolise future peace and honour the memory of all those who died in the world wars.

It comes after Princess Kate led moving tributes at a poignant Remembrance Day service at the National Memorial Arboretum this morning.

The Princess of Wales, 43, observed a two-minute silence at 11am before laying a wreath in remembrance of our fallen war heroes at the ceremony attended by thousands.

The Princess of Wales then stood in respectful silence as she laid a wreath in honour of those who have lost their lives in service to the country.

Kate also revealed that Prince George, 12, was a fan of World War II model airplanes.

While the relative of a D-Day veteran, who shared war stories with Kate, said to the princess “it’s all about family” adding “credit to you and Will”.

And Kate took a moment from the poignant ceremony to speak to The Sun’s legendary photographer Arthur Edwards.

She said: “Hello Arthur.”

The snapper put down his camera and commented that Kate’s hat nearly blew off during the ceremony.

Kate mimicked holding her hat down and gave a huge smile and laugh and she said: “I thought I was going to lose it at one time.”

Asked if she was well, Kate replied: “Yes I am.”

The princess added: “Nice to see you. Hope you are keeping well.”

The historic service at the Arboretum is recognised as the focal point of national remembrance on Armistice Day, bringing together those who have served, those currently serving and the families who support them.

It included a specially commissioned poem by Arboretum’s Poet in Residence Arji Manuelpillai.

The touching piece reflects on the importance of personal connections, experiences and bonds that are formed through military service – themes are said to be particularly close to the Princess’ heart.

The service also included performances by Black Voices and Talent in the Ranks – a team of singers, songwriters and poets from the armed services.

And, on Sunday, thousands of veterans gathered in Whitehall to remember Britain’s fallen war heroes.

The King – who is Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces and previously served in the Royal Navy – led the Two Minutes Silence.

Charles – wearing a field marshal uniform with a ceremonial coat – looked emotional as he saluted the memorial.

The wreath-laying ceremony was held after a two-minute silence was observed in the heart of Whitehall and at war memorials across the UK.

A gun was fired to mark the end of the silence before the Last Post was sounded by the Buglers of the Royal Marines.

Meanwhile, across the pond, Meghan Markle shared an iconic video of Harry racing out of a TV interview along with a touching message to mark Remembrance Day.

The clip shows the Duke darting off with fellow troops after an alarm is sounded.

Prince Harry, aged 28 at the time, was being interviewed in Afghanistan when he ran out of the interview.

In a nod to her husband’s military past and remembering those who died, Meghan says: “Thank you to all who served, sacrificed, and continue to serve.”

The post reads: “As my husband says, “Once served. Always serving.

“Thank you to all who served, sacrificed, and continue to serve.

“Honoring you on Veterans Day. And every day.”
