Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have reportedly added a new home to their property portfolio: a house in Portugal.

The couple, who infamously quit their roles as working members of the British royal family in 2020, already own an expansive $14.65 million mansion in Montecito, CA, where they live with their two children, Archie and Lilibet.

However, they were left without a European home base in 2023 when Harry’s father, King Charles, asked them to officially relinquish Frogmore Cottage, a property situated on the grounds of Windsor Castle, which they had been living in before they moved to the U.S.

But rather than find another British base, the Daily Mail reports that the couple have opted to snap up a home in the same European country where Harry’s cousin, Princess Eugenie, owns a home with her husband, Jack Brooksbank.

Although it is not known exactly where Harry and Meghan’s new Portuguese property is located in the country, the duo are understood to have made a “mega-secret” trip to visit Eugenie and Jack at their property in the exclusive CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club in 2023.

Harry and Meghan currently live in their 18,0000-square-foot Montecito, CA, mansion, which they purchased for $14.65 million in 2020.

The club is in the town of Melides, which was described in 2022 as Portugal’s “next big beach town” in an article published by Conde Nast Traveler.

There has been no suggestion that Harry, 40, and Meghan, 43, plan to give up their 18,000-square-foot California mansion, which they purchased in 2020.

However, the Daily Mail suggests that the purchase of the home in Portugal may well have enabled the couple to acquire what is known as a “golden visa,” a program that allows those who make investments in the economies of participating countries to gain legal rights there.

“In its most basic form, golden visa acquisition, or residence by investment and citizenship by investment, denotes the process whereby qualified, vetted candidates are granted either full residence or citizenship rights in exchange for a defined economic contribution to the host country,” law firm Henley & Partners explains on its website. “Golden visa programs give high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) the option of physically relocating to a favorable jurisdiction — either now or upon retirement — and becoming residents of that state with full legal rights, including the right to live, work, study, and receive healthcare in that country.”

The acquisition of a “golden visa” would enable Meghan, who was born in the U.S., and never completed her bid to become a British citizen while she was living in the U.K., and Harry to come and go from the European Union’s Schengen region without a obtaining a visa.

The Schengen area encompasses 29 European countries, including Portugal, France, Spain, and Germany, which have officially abolished all border controls at their mutual borders.

Further details of the home that Harry and Meghan reportedly purchased have not been revealed, however there is no doubt that the home will need to offer much luxury (and a slate of upscale amenities) in order to compete with their property in Montecito.

That property boasts a nine bedrooms, 16 bathrooms, a pool, and a tennis court, as well as beautiful gardens, which Meghan revealed in 2022 were the reason they fell in love with the home in the first place.

“One of the first things my husband saw when we walked around the house was those two palm trees,” she shared in an interview with The Cut. “We did everything we could to get this house.”

However, far from finding the home through a high-paid broker, Meghan revealed that they actually stumbled across the property online.

“We were looking in this area, and this house kept popping up online in searches,” she recalled, adding that they actually hesitated to view it because of its sky-high price tag.

“We didn’t have jobs, so we just were not going to come and see this house. It wasn’t possible,” she said. “It’s like when I was younger and you’re window shopping. It’s like, ‘I don’t want to go and look at all the things that I can’t afford. That doesn’t feel good.’”

Although Harry and Meghan have gone to great lengths to keep the interiors of their home private, they have shared a few small glimpses inside the property over the years—including images and clips that were aired as part of their 2022 Netflix series, “Harry & Meghan.”

The couple chose to shoot their on-camera interviews for the series in a rental property, however they offered up some personal home videos to the streaming site for use in the six-episode series, some of which featured sneak peeks at their home.
