Disney Has The Perfect VS Movie For Marvel

I, like many of you, watched yesterday’s Nintendo Direct to see the newest old games the company would try to repackage for the rapidly aging Switch. As both a comic book geek and an old-school gamer, I almost fell out of my seat when they announced a Marvel vs. Capcom collection was coming to the Switch sometime this year. Luckily, instead of falling to the floor and risking grievous injury to my 43-year-old body, I had an epiphany instead: Disney should make a Marvel vs. Capcom movie!

A Marvel Vs Capcom Movie

It’s the perfect combination of old and new trends in live-action media. Audiences are starting to get sick of superheroes, but they’re also embracing video game adaptations like never before. By combining the two, a Marvel vs. Capcom movie could say goodbye to the waning superhero trend and ring in video games as the hot new fad in Hollywood.

Even better, if the movie were to take place inside a game, it could be a way to bring characters like Iron Man and Thanos back into the MCU for one last hurrah. Imagine, if you will, that the multiverse also contains virtual realities. One Marvel vs. Capcom movie idea could involve Ultron surviving as a small bit of code in the Capcom video game universe.

Throw Some Capcom Baddies In The Mix

Maybe the weakened Ultron teams up with M. Bison—or some other Capcom baddie—to take over that universe. Suddenly, the Street Fighter crew, as well as Mega Man and Jill from Resident Evil need to crossover into the MCU to recruit the heroes that fought Ultron before. Maybe there are even two Marvel vs. Capcom movies, one taking place in the MCU and one taking place in the virtual world.

The Avengers end up in the Capcom universe and are initially outmatched. They decide to recreate Iron Man virtually to help them and—gasp!—Thanos as well. The movie practically writes itself!

Ryu Vs Thor Sounds Like A Blast

I know it sounds kind of fan-fiction, but are you really going to tell me you wouldn’t love to see a Marvel vs. Capcom movie on the big screen? You wouldn’t choose to see Ryu lobbing hadoukens at Thor over the last few MCU releases? Yeah, that’s what I thought.

Strider vs. Spider-Man is just too good to pass up.

Seems Like A No-Brainer

The best part about a Marvel vs. Capcom movie is that it’s entirely possible if Disney wants to do it. The movie rights for Street Fighter—and presumably the other Capcom franchises—currently belong to Legendary Entertainment. Meanwhile, Legendary recently split from Warner Bros. and now works with Sony.

And who has Marvel been playing nice with for almost a decade so that they can use Spider-Man in the MCU? Sony. It’s such a good idea that I’m almost sad I thought of it. Disney has been so averse to making money lately that you just know they’ll never make this movie.

A Billion Dollar Idea

But if they did make a Marvel vs Capcom movie… As long as it’s done at least halfway competently, I can’t see it grossing anything under a billion dollars.

As of right now, Disney’s only video game movie franchises are Tron and Wreck-It Ralph. The last Wreck-It Ralph was more about the internet than video games, and Tron…well, nobody actually likes Tron. If Disney wants to be a major player in the inevitable video game adaptation boom, they need to make a Marvel vs. Capcom movie.

Someone let Bob Iger know, I’ll only charge him a couple million dollars for the idea.
