Ken Jeong and Kristen Schaal discuss their acting experiences in ‘My Spy: The Eternal City’

“My Spy: The Eternal City,” the direct sequel to the 2020 film “My Spy,” was released on Prime Video nationwide last week.

In My Spy: The Eternal City, CIA agent JJ (Dave Bautista) and his protégé, Sophie (Chloe Coleman) race against time to stop a terrorist plot involving a nuclear bomb during her high school choir trip to Italy, where the duo once again, find themselves in a sticky situation.

The 2024 film reunites the original “My Spy” cast, including Dave Bautista, Chloe Coleman, Kristen Schaal, and Ken Jeong. This sequel is jam-packed with action and comedy, with a mix of clever and unconventional edge that distinguishes it from a typical family-friendly movie. Kristen and Ken will restore their characters, bringing all the humor back plus more for the sequel that is now available for streaming on Prime Video.

Kristen and Ken are no strangers to comedy films, as the two are well-known comedic figures in the industry. Despite this, the duo had to know when to bring all the humor once the camera began rolling, and when to ‘turn it off’ for certain scenes throughout the film, “I give a shoutout to the director, Pete Segal because he and I definitely discussed that at length,” Ken explained. “My character, David Kim was tracking his son, Collin, who was missing, and we really had that situation be an emotional arc throughout this movie.”

Segal really did an amazing job at keeping my intent of storytelling there… I do the comedy, the action, and do what I do well, but I really quite enjoyed the challenge of tracking the story and learning how to find that balance, so all credit goes to Pete.”

While talking about giving credit when it is due, Kristen was quick to give props to the movie’s editor when asked about how she approached blending action and comedy throughout this film.

“I give a lot of credit to the editor… It was a collaboration, and it was nice to have a mix of all those different elements,” Kristen stated. Kristen and Ken were constantly improvising during filming and a lot of it didn’t even make the final cut… “a lot of it had to get cut in favor of keeping the momentum going on a lot of important action sequences,” Kristen mentioned.

My Spy: The Eternal City is now streaming on Prime Video.
