Meghan Markle’s Surprising Royal Decision That ‘Did Not Go Down Well’ With Aides in 2019

Meghan Markle wasn’t an official royal family member for too long. The Duchess of Sussex married Prince Harry in May 2018, which is when she officially became Her Royal Highness. However, less than two years later in March 2020, Meghan officially gave up that royal title as she and harry left their royal duties.

Still, people haven’t forgotten about the duchess’ short-lived time in the family, and it’s rumored that there was once decision Meghan made in 2019 that “did not go down well” with palace aides.

Meghan Markle’s New York City baby shower ‘did not go down well’

Back in fall 2018, Harry and Meghan announced that they were expecting their first child. The Sussexes revealed the news shortly before embarking on their first royal tour, and by 2019, Meghan was ready to celebrate the future Prince Archie with a baby shower. Meghan is from the United States, and it’s where her mother and most of her friends still called home. As a result, Meghan took a secret trip to New York City to celebrate her pregnancy in the form of a baby shower. Apparently, though, it was to the dismay of royal aides.

“While the trip had been a hit with Meghan, senior courtiers back in the UK were spitting out their morning tea when they saw her lavish baby shower,” Omid Scobie wrote in “Finding Freedom.” He added that the shower had turned into “a media circus with what looked like carefully stage-managed paparazzi walks of the duchess in big black sunglasses.”

It’s not uncommon for women in the United States and other parts of the world to have a baby shower celebrating their first child. However, at the time, Meghan was under a microscope, and it seems everything she did was criticized by someone.

Meghan Markle wasn’t happy with her treatment in the royal family

Harry and Meghan have been outspoken about how displeased they were with Meghan’s treatment as a royal. The two said they felt the royals weren’t properly defending Meghan, and they even accused royals of selling stories about them to the press.

Harry and Meghan have not spoken much to the royal family since their departure, although some people think the beginnings of a reconciliation are on their way — at least between Harry and his brother, Prince William. Harry and Meghan recently bought a home in Portugal, which could mean spending more time in Europe.
