While discussing Deadpool & Wolverine, Marvel stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman subtly refer to Agents of SHIELD as part of the MCU. The Multiverse Saga has been incorporating all kinds of Marvel projects into the MCU multiverse. Deadpool & Wolverine‘s multiversal cameos, villain, and plot mark an important landmark in this process, as the MCU integrates not only Fox’s X-Men franchise, but also other Fox movies such as Elektra, Fantastic Four, and Blade.
During Vanity Fair‘s “Ryan Reynolds & Hugh Jackman Take Lie Detector Tests” video in which the two actors question each other on different topics, Reynolds asks Jackman if he has watched every project in the MCU canon, including Agents of SHIELD. Jackman clarifies that he’s only considering the films at that moment, which Reynolds dismisses. Watch the video below; the exchange happens at the 11:12 mark:
Ryan Reynolds: If you love the MCU so much, have you seen every film in the canon?
Hugh Jackman: No
Ryan Reynolds: Okay (…)
Ryan Reynolds: Describe season two episode five of Agent Shield [ sic ]
Hugh Jackman: You’re talking about films
Ryan Reynolds: What?
Hugh Jackman: You’re talking about film canonRyan Reynolds: Oh, there’s no difference.
So, Is Agents of SHIELD Canon?
Agents Of SHIELD Will Only Be Official MCU Canon When Marvel Studios Confirms It
Ryan Reynolds likely mentioned Agents of SHIELD during Hugh Jackman’s polygraph test to stump Jackman on his Marvel knowledge. To officially integrate Agents of SHIELD into the MCU multiverse, a multiversal MCU project must confirm its presence in the Sacred Timeline. Even if that doesn’t happen anytime soon, Marvel already confirmed Agents of SHIELD‘s ties to the MCU when Kevin Feige said that every single Marvel movie and show exists somewhere out there in the multiverse.
Agents of SHIELD was created as an extension of the early MCU, but the MCU’s main timeline and Agents of SHIELD‘s overarching plot gradually diverged with each new storyline and character. While Agents of SHIELD acknowledged the events of MCU movies such as The Avengers, Age of Ultron, and even Avengers: Infinity War, the MCU never took the events of Agents of SHIELD into account to avoid discrepancies. As a result, Agents of SHIELD is currently considered a standalone timeline parallel to the MCU.
Fox’s X-Men timelines are fully part of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga by Deadpool & Wolverine‘s ending. Avengers: Doomsday could do the same for other Marvel timelines, including that of Agents of SHIELD. This might be the last chance for Agents of SHIELD‘s fan-favorite characters such as Chloe Bennett’s Daisy Johnson a.k.a. Quake and Gabriel Luna’s Robbie Reyes a.k.a. Ghost Rider to make an appearance in the MCU during the Multiverse Saga.
