Eric Kripke Confirms The Boys Final Season: Promises a “Gory, Epic, Moist Climax”

Eric Kripke confirms that The Boys season 5 will be its final season. The popular Prime Video show will return with the first three episodes on June 13 and continue to release episodes weekly for the following five weeks. Before the release of this season, the development of The Boys season 5 was confirmed. Previously, creator Kripke had been vague about the longevity of The Boys, noting that he has been proven wrong before in terms of show length, citing his fifteen-season series Supernatural.

Per Kripke on Twitter, The Boys season 5 has been revealed to be the final season. Kripke took to the platform to announce that “Season 5 will be the Final Season” of The Boys. The creator revealed that this was “always his plan,” joking that he had to keep the news a secret until he got the approval from Vought.

In addition to confirming that The Boys will end after season 5, Kripke teased the ending of the series. In a description humorously typical of the Prime Video series, Kripke wrote that he is “thrilled to bring the story to a gory, epic, moist climax.” To go alongside this announcement, Kripke posted a screenshot of the final episode of The Boys season 4, with the vast majority of the text blacked out so as not to spoil it.

Why Ending The Boys After Season 5 Is The Right Decision

The Show Will Go Out On Its Own Terms

There are several reasons why Kripke is making the right decision by ending The Boys after season 5. For one, Kripke is supposedly following his pre-determined plan for the series, which will allow him to stick to his original arc for Homelander, Billy Butcher, and the rest of The Boys squad. This ending will avoid a long-running show wherein the network’s pressure for more seasons caused the series to be overextended beyond what was planned.

As a result, the quality of the upcoming two seasons of The Boys will hopefully be maintained. The Boys is a well-reviewed series thus far, garnering a 90% Rotten Tomatoes score overall. As it stands, the reception of The Boys has gotten more positive as the seasons have continued. Season 1 received an 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, whereas The Boys season 3 climbed to a near-perfect 98%. Given these ratings, ending The Boys at season 5 will allow the show to quit while it is ahead.

Furthermore, The Boys relies on a sense of timeliness that might get exhausting when extended across significantly more seasons. Along with being a satire of the superhero genre, the show overtly reflects on current-day political topics. Sustaining hot-button issue-based content over multiple years is already challenging enough, and will be a better fit for The Boys five-season arc.
