Deadpool & Wolverine will introduce both characters to the MCU, complete with several Deadpool variants from across the multiverse. As the only Marvel movie releasing in 2024 tied to the MCU, Deadpool & Wolverine is highly anticipated. Not only does the film look exciting in its own right, but it will have big ramifications for the Multiverse Saga. Deadpool & Wolverine‘s cast will see the two titular characters embedded into the MCU now that the franchise is focusing intently on the clashing of different Marvel timelines.
This will likely lead to other remnants of the Fox X-Men movie timeline being included in the film, as evidenced by characters like Pyro, Lady Deathstrike, and Azazel being spotted in Deadpool & Wolverine‘s trailers. These characters are all being enveloped into the MCU via the TVA, or Time Variance Authority, the multiversal police force introduced in Loki. Another MCU concept introduced in Loki linked to the TVA was the appearance of variants, different versions of the same character from across the multiverse. In Deadpool & Wolverine‘s story, several variants of the former mutant will appear.
7. Original Deadpool
The Titular Hero Of The Deadpool Trilogy
Naturally, the most important variant of Deadpool & Wolverine is the titular version. Played by Ryan Reynolds, the primary character of the film will be the same version included in earlier Deadpool movie appearances: Deadpool and Deadpool 2. Despite the concept of the multiverse giving Marvel Studios the chance to introduce an MCU version of Deadpool, the studio opted to keep the version from the 20th Century Fox X-Men movies, with the trailers offering insight into how that variant of Deadpool gets whisked away on a multiversal adventure.
The scenes in Deadpool & Wolverine‘s trailers show the character celebrating a birthday with his friends from Deadpool and Deadpool 2. These scenes are evidently set after Deadpool 2‘s post-credit scenes that showed the character saving X-Force members from their earlier, untimely deaths. However, the character is soon accosted by the TVA and thrust into a multiversal adventure where he acquires the help of Wolverine.
6. Dogpool
The Canine Companion From Marvel Comics
The other confirmed variant of Deadpool in the upcoming MCU Phase 5 movie is Dogpool. Dogpool may seem far-fetched, but is actually building off a character from Loki. The Disney+ show revealed that variants can come in the form of animals when the titular god of mischief encountered Alligator Loki. In Deadpool & Wolverine, this concept will continue via the inclusion of a Deadpool variant in the form of a Chinese Crested Pug.
Dogpool can be seen in the various trailers for Deadpool & Wolverine, and will seemingly be an ally of the titular duo throughout the story. In Marvel Comics, Dogpool is a member of the Deadpool Corps, a group of multiversal variants of Wade Wilson who undertake several wacky missions and adventures. Via Dogpool, Deadpool & Wolverine not only has the option to include the Deadpool Corps in the MCU but also provides an adorable sidekick to match the character’s meta, self-referential humor.
5. Headpool
A Zombie Variant Of The Merc With A Mouth
Although Dogpool is the only variant to have been confirmed by the Deadpool & Wolverine trailers, other elements of the film’s marketing have confirmed that Headpool will appear. Deadpool & Wolverine‘s new Deadpool variants – including Headpool – were confirmed through Funko merch, with the popular collector brand revealing Pop! toys of other characters for the film. One such character was Headpool, another intriguing, hilarious variant of Wade Wilson from Marvel Comics.
In the comics, Headpool was originally known simply as Deadpool from Earth-2149. However, this universe suffered from a zombie outbreak in which Wade was bitten. Eventually, Wade’s zombie form was transported to Earth-616 before his body was torn apart, leaving only a semi-sentient, zombie head. This led to this variant of Wade being known as Headpool. In Deadpool & Wolverine, the film’s multiversal story will likely see Headpool included similarly to Marvel Comics, with the Funko merch showing him alongside the original Deadpool as a potential member of the Deadpool Corps.
4. Kidpool
A Long-Theorized, Younger Deadpool Variant Will Appear In Deadpool & Wolverine
Alongside Headpool, two other Deadpool variants were confirmed for Deadpool & Wolverine. One of the other variants in question was Kidpool, a younger version of the character who has been the subject of many Deadpool 3 theories. Kidpool is another variant from Earth-10330 in Marvel Comics who eventually joins the Deadpool Corps. Despite not being confirmed in the trailers, the aforementioned Funko Pop! toys confirm Kidpool’s role in Deadpool & Wolverine.
As alluded to, MCU fans have long theorized that Kidpool will be part of the upcoming film. Not only does Kidpool make sense for a multiversal Deadpool movie, but it also builds on the introduction of Kid Loki in Loki, similarly to how Dogpool does. The subject of these theories has tended to be Walker Scobell, the Percy Jackson and the Olympians actor whose breakout role came in The Adam Project. Scobell was widely praised for accurately depicting a younger version of Ryan Reynolds in the film, lending credence to his potential role as Kidpool in Deadpool & Wolverine.
The Adam Project was directed by Deadpool & Wolverine filmmaker Shawn Levy, further supporting theories of Scobell’s involvement in the latter.
3. Babypool
An Even Younger Version Of Wade Will Be Part Of Deadpool 3
Finally, the last variant confirmed for Deadpool & Wolverine via Funko Pop! merchandise is Babypool. Babypool, or Baby Deadpool, has long been used in various forms of marketing over the years, depicting Wade Wilson as a toddler. While the character is not an official member of the Deadpool Corps in Marvel Comics, Deadpool & Wolverine will nonetheless include a baby version of the former titular character.
This was confirmed by Funko merchandise. One of the various Pop! toys crafted for Deadpool & Wolverine include a toddler version of Wade, complete with a Deadpool-themed pacifier. Interestingly, this character is associated with Wolverine on the packaging of the Funko Pops!, potentially hinting at a closer connection between Wolverine and the baby Deadpool than many first thought.
2. Lady Deadpool
A Female Variant Of Deadpool Will Appear In Deadpool & Wolverine
Aside from Dogpool and the original Deadpool, one other variant of Wade Wilson has been hinted at – but not outright confirmed – by Deadpool & Wolverine‘s trailers. On June 8, also known as Best Friend’s Day, Marvel Studios released a new, minute-long trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine. Midway through this trailer, a shot of someone walking toward the camera wearing Deadpool colors is shown, yet with the top half of their body cut off. Many have been theorizing that this character is Lady Deadpool.
Marvel Comics’ Lady Deadpool is one of the more prominent variants of the character in the Deadpool Corps. Named Wanda Wilson, Lady Deadpool hails from Earth-3010 and will be one of the variants in Deadpool & Wolverine. Like Kidpool, Lady Deadpool has been heavily theorized, with Taylor Swift recently being debunked as the actor for the MCU iteration of the character. Another common theory is that Ryan Reynolds’ wife, Blake Lively, will portray Lady Deadpool, though this remains to be seen.
1. Samurai Deadpool
Ryan Reynolds Will Play A Different Deadpool From The Original Variant
The final Deadpool variant confirmed for Deadpool & Wolverine on this list was, ironically, one of the earliest to be revealed. Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy revealed early in the film’s production that he and his crew were striving to shoot a lot of the film on location. Rather than green screen sets and the utilization of the Volume, Deadpool & Wolverine used exterior sets to shoot many of the film’s sequences. Naturally, this led to set photos and other reveals being leaked by the U.K. news outlet Daily Mail.
Some of these set photos revealed a new variant of Deadpool. This version, also played by Ryan Reynolds, sports a man-bun that is half-tied up, letting long brown hair fall beneath his shoulders. When combined with the shiny version of Deadpool’s original suit and two katanas, this Deadpool variant becomes clear as Samurai Deadpool. How much of a role this variant plays in Deadpool & Wolverine is unknown, but it is clear from his appearance – and the many other variants mentioned – that the Deadpool Corps will hilariously impact the MCU multiverse to full effect.
