The tales of Virgin River are far from over. On October 23, Netflix announced that the small town romantic drama has been renewed for a seventh season.

Virgin River Season 6 made quite the splash and left us with so many cliffhangers heading into Season 7. So, do we have a release date? What’s the prequel status? Scroll down for the latest updates regarding Virgin River Season 7.

When is Virgin River Season 7 coming out?

Netflix hasn’t announced a premiere date for Season 7. However, we do know that the upcoming season will consist of 10 episodes. Across its five seasons, Virgin River has appeared in the Global Top 10 TV (English) list for 25 weeks since the weekly top 10 lists started in 2021. Season 5 reached the top 10 in 77 countries.

The sixth season dropped on December 19 with 10 episodes. The show has had a new season every year since its debut in 2019. It’s highly likely Season 7 will follow suit and debut in 2025.

Who will return for Virgin River Season 7?

Barring any deaths or surprising exits in Season 6, you can expect the core cast to return for Season 7. This includes Alexandra Breckenridge (Mel), Martin Henderson (Jack), Zibby Allen (Brie), Benjamin Hollingsworth (Brady), Tim Matheson (Doc), Annette O’Toole (Hope), Colin Lawrence (Preacher), Sarah Dugdale (Lizzie), and Kai Bradbury (Denny). Despite his health scare, Everett (John Allen Nelson) should be back as well.

What happened in Virgin River Season 6?

Mel and Jack finally said “I do” at the end of Virgin River Season 6. The couple enjoyed the wedding of their dreams, surrounded by their loved ones. However, these newlyweds will have their hands full in Season 7. In the finale, a very pregnant Marley ran to Mel and asked her to adopt her baby. She feared Darla and Phil were backing out of the adoption.

Brie and Brady had a steamy hookup on the pool table in Jack’s bar, despite being in relationships with other people. At the wedding, Mike popped the question to Brie and admitted that he knew about her tryst with Brady. Meanwhile, Lark overheard Brady confess his love for Brie and ran off with all his money.

Outside forces are looming over Doc’s clinic, but the biggest shocker involved Charmaine. When Mel and Jack realized that Charmaine didn’t show up for the wedding, Jack went over to her place to check on her. He found her place in total disarray. When he walked into the twins’ nursery, he had a shocked look on his face, leaving viewers in doubt about what he’s looking at.

What will happen in Virgin River Season 7?

Showrunner Patrick Sean Smith revealed that Brie will make a decision about getting engaged to Mike in Season 7, but the love triangle is far from over. “I think he would do anything to try to make things work with her,” Smith told Swooon about Mike. “But there’s always going to be the Brady factor, and that’s what keeps the triangle alive in Season 7 is just both sides battling to see which one wins in the end.”

The Marley situation with Mel and Jack will be at top of mind in Season 7. The newlyweds will be “exploring [the] potential” of possibly adopting the baby as they “continue on their path to parenthood.”

As for Charmaine and the twins, Smith promised that the twins are okay. “I would be concerned about Charmaine,” he told TV Insider. “I feel like after Season 5 with the miscarriage, I want to promise that no babies will be harmed in the production of this show in the future, but the circumstances are messy, and Charmaine’s at the center of it, which is where she tends to typically find herself, in the middle of a mess, right?”

The Virgin River boss is also excited to dive into the clinic drama in Season 7. “One thing that I think that’s a really special opportunity for our show is, while we’re not a traditional medical procedural, we still have that medical perspective that we hold through the series, and getting to run that through the lens of a small town practice compared to Grey’s Anatomy and all the other shows that are about major hospitals, it feels like there’s a fresh opportunity for us to look at the current state of medicine a little bit and how that can influence these smaller practices,” he noted.

What does this mean for the Virgin River prequel?

Virgin River prequel focusing on the love story between Mel’s parents, Everett and Sarah, is in the works at the streamer, according to Deadline. The younger versions of Everett and Sarah, played by Callum Kerr and Jessica Rothe, made their debut in Season 6.

Smith told Swooon that the prequel is “still currently in development.” However, young Everett and Sarah will be returning in Season 7. “There’s so much that was presumed, and some things that have been referenced, but that’s where I think the more we can fill out this love that spans almost 40 years, if not 40-plus years, the better,” he continued. “I think there’s a lot of big events and milestones that can happen along the way that we can highlight as we fill that out.”
