As far as I know, they did kind of confirm that we’re going for a third. I haven’t seen any scripts, though. I would love to. But I’m pretty sure we’re going for a third.
Will Rings Of Power Season 3 Be Renewed?
Prior Reports Are In Line With Ismael Cruz Córdova’s Comments
In November 2017, Amazon secured the television rights to The Lord of the Rings from the Tolkien Estate, committing to a five-season production valued at a minimum of $1 billion, positioning it as the most expensive TV series ever produced. Premiered in 2022, season 1 went on to become Prime Video’s most-watched original series, so Rings of Power season 2 was promptly renewed, which premiered in August 2024 with viewership declining compared to season 1.
Ismael Cruz Córdova’s comments are in line with what reports have said about The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 3. While the third season has been in early development for several months, Amazon has not yet officially approved the season. However, they are reportedly satisfied with season 2’s viewership and, as a result, sources have suggested that the streamer still intends to conclude the series with season 5, in line with showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay’s original plan.
Our Take On Rings Of Power Season 3’s Chances
All Signs Point To A Renewal
Image via Prime VideoOverall, all signs point to Prime Video renewing Rings of Power for a third season, and likely a fourth and fifth to follow. The rights to Lord of the Rings cost Amazon a minimum of $1 billion, and while they aren’t contractually required to produce five seasons, the company clearly recognizes the value of the intellectual property and will likely want to see it through to the end. Despite a drop in viewership from season 1 to season 2, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 remains a strong performer on Prime Video.
