The highly anticipated Daredevil: Born Again will release in 2025 and Charlie Cox hopes that he can stick around in the MCU for quite a while.
With Daredevil: Born Again set to come out in early 2025, Charlie Cox recently shared some of his hopes about playing the character for a long time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Cox first portrayed Matt Murdock in the Netflix series Daredevil, which was released on April 10, 2015. The show spanned 39 episodes across three seasons and appeared alongside other Marvel street heroes in The Defenders series before ending on October 29, 2018. Charlie Cox would make his first appearance as the character in the MCU timeline three years later in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
It originally wasn’t clear if the Netflix shows that included Daredevil were canon to the MCU, with Daredevil: Born Again‘s story seeming set to answer this question. However, the Defenders Saga has been confirmed as MCU canon in recent history, with Vincent D’Onofrio reprising his Kingpin role in Echo and Cox appearing as Daredevil in two different MCU shows already. Cox recently spoke with Deadline at the 2024 Disney Upfront and talked about some of his hopes for Daredevil in the MCU, which includes playing the character for another ten years.
Daredevil: Born Again Is Already Set To Be At Least 2 Seasons
Daredevil: Born Again isn’t set to come out until March 2025, but Daredevil: Born Again season 2 has already been confirmed to be in the works. It’s unclear how long it will take for the second season to arrive, but a two-year gap between seasons (which is common for shows today) could allow Cox to continue to play Daredevil in other MCU projects. If season 2 is successful, more seasons could follow and could make Cox’s hopes for ten years of Daredevil even more possible as the character becomes a main character in the overall universe.
There is a lot of story left to tell about Daredevil which could help extend Daredevil: Born Again past the two seasons that have already been confirmed. With D’Onofrio returning as Kingpin in the MCU, the character has been set to become the new mayor of New York City, a storyline that could encompass the Daredevil series, other street-level heroes, and even Spider-Man 4 if it tries to ground the character a bit more following his multiverse-ending stakes in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Daredevil Is A Natural MCU Team Candidate
Daredevil has already been shown to fit well into the broader MCU. Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock made his first MCU appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, where he was a natural choice for Peter’s legal assistance. After that, he found a romantic connection in She-Hulk while also sporting a new costume, and showed off his visceral fighting skills in Echo. Cox has integrated into the larger MCU smoothly so far, and his presence as Daredevil opens up a lot more possibilities for team-ups going forward.
Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock has shown natural chemistry with each hero he has teamed up with or fought against, in both the Defenders Saga and the larger MCU. Daredevil as a character is also a highly skilled fighter that wouldn’t feel out of place alongside the high-powered characters typically seen in the Avengers films. Of course, Daredevil would feel right at home in a Spider-Man film that focuses more on street-level adventures, something Spider-Man actor Tom Holland agrees with.
Charlie Cox’s Daredevil Could Survive The Rumored MCU Soft Reboot
The MCU has gone on for quite some time now, and it seems like a soft reboot might be best for the universe to feel fresh again all these years later, with Avengers: Secret Wars providing the perfect opportunity to do so. With a soft reboot, not everything that came before is erased. It allows the creators to see what is working and what is not to help make the universe that much stronger going forward.
With Daredevil finally finding his footing in the MCU, it seems likely the franchise would keep him around even after a soft reboot. Keeping Charlie Cox as Daredevil feels like a top priority for the MCU as he was so well-liked during the Defenders’ era of Netflix that bringing him back into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe felt like a natural choice. With the MCU being as large as it is, a soft reboot that places a stronger emphasis on grounded, street-level stories could be the perfect way to establish a new status quo.
Daredevil’s MCU Future Could Easily Go On For More Than 10 Years
Daredevil has a rich history in Marvel Comics, and there are a ton of stories to glean from and incorporate into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Of course, the original show itself still has plenty of ground left to cover too, such as the Daredevil season 3 cliffhanger with Bullseye that could be explored more in Daredevil: Born Again.
Daredevil fits in with numerous heroes as well, so his character can continue to develop in projects outside his own. If the MCU wants to continue to explore the street-level side of the universe, Daredevil could essentially be the Iron Man-esque figure leading the Defenders, similar to Marvel’s Netflix television era. With Jon Bernthal returning as The Punisher, exploring their tense dynamic once more in Daredevil: Born Again could also work out well, and potentially allow for further follow up should the antihero get his own series.
Cox’s portrayal of Daredevil has proven to be a fan favorite and has already slotted into the broader MCU effectively with his handful of cameos. Daredevil: Born Again will be the first full-blown foray into the MCU for his character, and will hopefully help set the tone and expectations for him moving forward. It seems obvious that Charlie Cox loves playing Matt Murdock, and playing the character for another ten years could be a fantastic opportunity to tell more stories about Daredevil in the MCU.
