A PRINCESS Diana documentary is on the long list of potential shows Netflix could produce with Prince Harry and Meghan as part of their “first look” agreement.
The idea of the Duke of Sussex being involved in a programme to mark 30 years since his mother’s death has been discussed as the streaming giant enters a new deal with the couple. Several proposals for shows were raised during renewal talks as the Sussexes’ original £100million, five-year contract runs out this year.
The new deal, which was announced this month, gives Netflix first refusal on any of the couple’s suggestions, while covering their Archewell Productions’ overheads including its office and staff costs.
A second series of lifestyle show With Love, Meghan will air from Tuesday on the platform — months after its first received savage reviews.
Netflix has also committed to a “holiday special” in December, as well as a short documentary about orphans in Uganda called Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within.
But Harry, 40, is considering a documentary on his mother Diana to coincide with the 30th anniversary of her death, which falls in 2027.
An industry source said: “If Harry wants to do it then Netflix will bite his hand off.”
Such a documentary featuring Harry would be a ratings winner for Netflix, which has not had a hit with the Sussexes since their 2022 six-parter, Harry & Meghan. Last night, the Duchess posted a video on Instagram of Harry successfully surfing a barrel wave — thought to have been filmed at an artificial wave pool in California.
She wrote: “We interrupt your regularly scheduled programming to bring you this important message” with a fox emoji — and added Salt-N-Pepa’s track Whatta Man.
Harry, who was 12 when Diana died in a car crash in Paris in 1997, has often spoken about his mother and the impact her death had on him.
He has told of the trauma he felt walking behind his her coffin and wrote about his father breaking the news to him in his memoir, Spare. In the book, Harry also revealed he had visited a medium, who told him that “your mother is with you”.
The psychic said: “Your mother says, ‘You’re living the life she couldn’t. You’re living the life she wanted for you’.”
In the Harry & Meghan Netflix series, he said his new home of California was “one of the places where I think my mum was probably gonna end up living potentially”.
He has a photo wall dedicated to his mother at his home and gave daughter Lilbet the middle name Diana. In 2007, Harry and brother William attended the Concert for Diana at Wembley ahead of the 10th anniversary of their mother’s death.
And they visited floral tributes left outside the gates at Kensington Palace for the 20th anniversary in 2017. Although the 30th anniversary is still two years away, telly executives would need to begin planning a show within the next six months. It is also understood Harry could feature or contribute to a non-Netflix Diana project.
