A toddler in England drowned in a shallow river while her father was herding sheep nearby.
Charles Wainright, a sheep farmer in Devon, left his daughter, 2-year-old Eva-Rose Wainwright, alone with their family dog while he tended to sheep on June 16, 2023, per the Daily Mail, the The Mirror and Birmingham Live, which cited recent findings from an area coroner.
He returned 15 to 20 minutes later and found Eva-Rose face-down in slow-moving water. Neither he nor paramedics were able to revive her, and she was pronounced dead on the scene, per the outlets.
Over two years later, Alison Longhorn, the area coroner for Devon, has released her conclusion surrounding the incident, calling it as an accidental death following an official inquest, according to the Daily Mail, the The Mirror and Birmingham Live.
“This is a truly tragic death of a little girl and I can’t begin to imagine how difficult it must have been for her parents,” she said in a statement on Tuesday, Jan. 20, per the outlets.
She continued, “This case really demonstrates the dangers that even very shallow water can present to children when they are left unsupervised either in or near shallow water.”
”I can only express my condolences to Eva-Rose’s family,” she added.
The Devon Coroner’s Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Friday, Jan. 23.
Eva-Rose’s family called her an “adored daughter” who “left us far too soon,” in an online tribute published in August 2023.
She was “a loving sister, granddaughter and niece,” they added.
