Meghan Markle just subtly honored Princess Diana — and, of course, fans have thoughts! And not all good…

On Sunday, the Duchess of Sussex took to her Instagram Story to share several videos of her taking a break from work to enjoy the sunny day out in her backyard with her dog and kids. She then flipped the camera to show herself smiling — and wearing a purple Northwestern sweatshirt!

If you don’t know, the Suits alum attended the university from 1999 to 2003. It’s her alma mater and has a special place in her heart. But this exact sweatshirt is also a subtle reference to Prince Harry‘s momma!

You see, Diana used to be seen wearing the SAME sweatshirt the year before she died. She was given the sweatshirt after visiting the school in June 1996. She was then spotted wearing it outside the Chelsea Harbour Club in London alongside white biker shorts and sneakers. See (below):

Since it’s been said the actress has wanted to become the “new Diana,” naturally fans had mixed reviews about this look! Taking to X (Twitter), people reacted:

“WTF!!!! She is literally, I repeat LITERALLY, hunting down all of Diana’s clothes!!!! She is sick ! She’s psychotic!! She needs a doctor!!”

“It’s not a ‘sweet nod’ it’s sick, it’s cosplaying her husbands dead mother, its beyond sick”

“I have no words!”

Tons of others came to her defense though, chiming in:

“Ohhhh ok I get it now, so when Kate Middleton dresses like Princess Diana, it’s a limited clothing option, but when Meghan Markle does it, it’s calculated and creepy?”

“Um, no ma’am. Northwestern University is MEGHAN’s Alma Mater. Diana looks cute but merely visited in 1996. In America people wear paraphernalia from their colleges/universities long after graduating.”

“She’s an Alumni !!!”
