Asked if his family liked his new beard, he replied: “Well Charlotte didn’t like it the first time.

“I got floods of tears the first time I grew a beard, so I had to shave it off. And then I grew it back.

“I thought, hang on a second and I convinced her it was going to be okay.”

Setting royal fans aflutter

The typically clean-shaven prince set royal fans aflutter when he debuted a smattering of stubble in a video alongside Princess Kate, praising Team GB after the Paris Olympics in August.

It comes after William spoke of his ‘pride‘ in Kate after her cancer battle.

In an interview with journalists in Cape Town, South Africa, the future King said he had to “just crack on” and “got to keep going”.

He added “I enjoy pacing myself” while making sure “that I have got time for my family too.”

The prince also opened up about his royal role saying he does not like more “responsibility” but happy with the “freedom” he has to launch his £50m Earthshot Prize and homelessness scheme.

While the King, 76, and Kate, 42, have both issued statements about their health struggles this is the first time William has spoken so candidly.

Asked how his year has been, he replied: “Honestly? It’s been dreadful. It’s probably been the hardest year in my life.”

William, who took time off work while Kate was recovering from cancer, added: “So, trying to get through everything else and keep everything on track has been really difficult.

“But I’m so proud of my wife, I’m proud of my father, for handling the things that they have done.

“But from a personal family point of view, it’s been, yeah, it’s been brutal.”
