When Prince William and Princess Kate first met, they were undergraduates at the University of St Andrews. The pair dated for many years afterward, and even briefly split up for a time, before finally taking the plunge and deciding to settle down together.

Kate and William

When their engagement was announced in 2010, the couple took part in an official interview to mark the special occasion, after initially keeping it under wraps for a few weeks. William popped the question to Kate whilst they were on a romantic holiday in Kenya before the couple finally revealed the news to the public. In the engagement interview, the couple covered a wide range of topics, from the early days of their relationship to William asking Kate’s father Michael for permission, and the engagement ring itself.

Eagle-eyed royal fans resharing clips from the interview on X, formerly known as Twitter, spotted one sweet moment between the young couple when Kate seemed a little nervous and perhaps even a bit shaky during the filmed interview with ITV’s Tom Bradby – and what they perceived as a sweet moment of support from William in response. “Does anyone have a longer version of this video? I believe William had to help Catherine [because] her hand was shaking,” one user. Another replied, “Catherine was shaking so bad they could not get a good photo of the ring so William held her hand.”

Even in the interview, William admitted that as a couple they were a bit nervous to take part. After Bradby noted that they seemed relaxed and happy during the filmed conversation, William replied: “We are. We’re like sort of ducks, very calm on the surface with little feet going under the water. It’s been really exciting because we’ve been talking about it for a long time so for us, it’s a real relief and it’s really nice to be able to tell everybody. Especially for the last two or three weeks it’s been quite difficult not telling anyone, keeping it to ourselves for reasons we had to. And it’s really nice to finally be able to share it.”

Kate also admitted that the very first time she had met William she had endured an attack of nerves during the engagement interview, saying: “Well I actually think I went bright red when I met you and sort of scuttled off, feeling very shy about meeting you. Actually William wasn’t there for quite a bit of the time initially, he wasn’t there for Freshers Week, so it did take a bit of time for us to get to know each other but we did become very close friends from quite early.”
