Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, was honored with the prestigious Pat Tillman Award for Service at the 2024 ESPY Awards held at the Dolby Theatre. The award recognizes his remarkable contributions to the Invictus Games, a Paralympic-style competition he founded for wounded service members.
A Tribute to Pat Tillman
The Pat Tillman Award, named after the late ex-footballer Pat Tillman, holds special significance. Tillman famously left behind a $3.8 million NFL contract to join the US Army after the 9/11 tragedy. Tragically, he lost his life due to friendly fire in Afghanistan two decades ago.
In a heartfelt acceptance speech, Prince Harry emphasized that the award belonged not to him but to the veterans and service personnel from over 20 nations who made the Invictus Games a reality. He said, “I stand here not as Prince Harry, Pat Tillman award recipient, but rather as a voice on behalf of the Invictus Games Foundation. Moments like these help us reach those that need Invictus most and reduce the alarming statistic of more than 20 veterans a day taking their own lives in this country alone.”
Acknowledging the Tillman Family
Prince Harry expressed his deepest gratitude to everyone in the Pat Tillman Foundation, led by Marie Tillman Shenton, who was present at the event. He also paid tribute to the Tillman family, particularly Mary Tillman. He stated, “Her advocacy for Pat’s legacy is deeply personal and one that I respect. The bond between a mother and son is eternal and transcends even the greatest losses.”
Giving a nod to late mother
‘Her advocacy for Pat’s legacy is deeply personal and one that I respect,’ he said, referring to the fallen soldier’s mom. ‘The bond between a mother and son is eternal and transcends even the greatest losses.’
Controversy and Recognition
However, controversy surrounded Prince Harry’s selection as this year’s recipient. Mary Tillman openly expressed her surprise, calling him a “controversial and divisive individual.” She argued that other deserving recipients within the veteran community lacked the resources and privilege that Prince Harry possesses.
Despite the criticism, the ESPY Awards continue to celebrate unsung sporting heroes. Last year, the Buffalo Bills training staff received the Pat Tillman award for their life-saving actions on the field.
Prince Harry’s acceptance of the Pat Tillman Award underscores the power of unity, courage, and mutual respect—a message that resonates beyond national boundaries and personal struggles. His commitment to supporting veterans through the Invictus Games remains unwavering, honoring Pat Tillman’s legacy and inspiring others to make a difference.
