Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been living in their $14 million Montecito, California, mansion nicknamed “The Chateau” since July 2020. The massive 18,000-square-foot home sits on five acres of land and boasts 16 bathrooms and nine bedrooms as well as a separate guest house with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. There’s also a library, a sauna, a wine cellar, a game room, a gym, tennis courts, and an arcade.

The couple is said to love their residence and have no plans of moving, but it’s now being reported they bought a second property in Europe and the reason they did so is to be close to certain royal family members.

Read on to find out who their new neighbors are.

Where Meghan and Harry just purchased a new home and near who

According to multiple reports, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have purchased a home in Portugal right near Harry’s cousin, Princess Eugenie, and her husband, Jack Brooksbank.

Although Eugenie pledged allegiance to the royal family back in May with a social media post and photos from a Buckingham Palace Garden Party hosted by Prince William, it’s believed that she is still very close with Meghan and Harry. The princess and Brooksbank split their time between London and Portugal and considering that Meghan doesn’t seem keen to return to the U.K. anytime soon, the place where they would be able to get together as much as they want would be Portugal.

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams elaborated on the duke and duchess’s new home purchase telling Express: “[Eugenie and Jack] moved into Frogmore when the Sussexes vacated it. Eugenie and Jack visited them in California and they reportedly holidayed with them in Portugal too. Now, they have bought a house in Portugal where Eugenie and Jack live … and they are likely to see more of each other.”

Fitzwilliams added another reason explaining: “Also this gives the Sussexes a foothold in the EU and a base near Britain. We expected Harry to visit Britain periodically as he has cases against the media pending as well as his case against the Home Office on security and presumably will surely wish to see his father whilst he fights illness, despite recent confusion as to whether this was or was not possible.

“Will their next ‘faux royal’ tour be to a European country following their successes in Nigeria and Colombia? How long before we see photos of Archie and Lilibet enjoying the Portuguese sun with their parents, and possibly even one day with Eugenie, Jack, and their family?”

Reason the princess and her husband split their time between Portugal and the U.K.

And for anyone wondering why Eugenie and her husband live in Portugal for part of the year, it’s due to Brookbank’s job.

The family relocated to Comporta in 2022 when Brooksbank began working with CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club property tycoon Mike Meldman. However, there have been several reports that while the princess enjoys living on Portugal’s Blue Coast with its sun-soaked beaches, she wouldn’t mind moving back to the U.K. full-time as she misses being close to her mother, Sarah Ferguson, and sister, Princess Beatrice.

But Eugenie did reveal something that makes where she’s living now a “dream” compared to living back in London.

During the podcast Table Manners, the royal shared: “This is why Portugal is the dream because I can go to the supermarket in my exercise gear and my hair piled on my head and not mind. Not care. No one cares.”
