Jonathan Franzen’s popular novel The Corrections could be getting the TV treatment, with an assist from a showbiz legend.

TVLine has confirmed that Oscar winner Meryl Streep is attached to star in a potential limited-series adaptation of The Corrections, based on Franzen’s 2001 book. A CBS Studios rep confirms to us that the project is in its “very, very early” stages, with Puck reporting that it will soon be pitched to streaming services.

Franzen will reportedly pen the adaptation and serve as an executive producer.

First published in September 2001, The Corrections — which was once caught up in a memorable feud between Franzen and Oprah Winfrey — centers on the dysfunctional Lambert family: elderly couple Alfred and Enid, and their three children, Chip, Gary and Denise. When Alfred’s health begins to deteriorate from Parkinson’s disease and dementia, Enid becomes fixated on reuniting the family, determined to have one last Christmas together before her husband is too ill.

In 2011, producer Scott Rudin and director Noah Baumbach attempted to turn The Corrections into a drama series at HBO — with Ewan McGregor, Dianne Wiest and Maggie Gyllenhaal among the cast members — but the network opted not to pick up the pilot to series. Efforts to produce a film adaptation have been stop-and-start since 2001.

Streep, meanwhile, has amassed several TV credits in recent years, including HBO’s Big Little Lies, Apple TV+’s Extrapolations and, most recently, Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building.
