It’s truly unfortunate what has happened between Megan and her father Thomas. By all accounts, Thomas seems like a decent, hardworking man who doted on Megan and supported her fully through her childhood and education. No parent deserves to be cut off and treated so cruelly by their own child, especially after providing so much love and care over the years.
From what I’ve read about their relationship, it’s clear Thomas played an invaluable role as a single father in raising Megan after her mother left when she was very young. He was devoted to being there for Megan and giving her the stability and support every child needs. While balancing a job to provide for her needs, he still made time on weekends to spend with her and be a part of her school activities. Thomas even paid for Megan to attend university, giving her the opportunity to study and lay the foundations for her acting career. That level of commitment, sacrifice and generosity from a parent is so admirable.
Yet despite all Thomas did for her, Megan has now cut him off completely and refuses to even send him a birthday card, let alone visit him on his 80th birthday. The lack of basic compassion or gratitude is striking. Thomas now finds himself alone in a shabby cabin in New Mexico, unacknowledged by his daughter on such a significant occasion. It’s incredibly sad that after being such a loving and supportive father, this is how Thomas has been repaid in his old age. No person, let alone a parent, deserves such treatment.
What’s more, Megan’s behavior towards Thomas seems to be part of a troubling pattern of hers. Multiple accounts portray Megan as someone who is relentless in “neutralizing” and destroying relationships with people once she feels they are no longer useful to her or have crossed her in some way. The book Revenge documents numerous examples of Megan giving people the “silent treatment” even from a young age, cutting people out of her life without mercy or apology. Sadly, it seems Thomas has now been one of Megan’s victims, discarded and forgotten despite their close past relationship.
Of course, it’s possible Megan feels some resentment or betrayal over Thomas’ actions in the lead up to her wedding, such as allegedly staging paparazzi photos. However, from what I’ve read, Thomas was mostly abandoned and left to fend for himself during that chaotic time, with no support from Megan or the Palace. After dedicating his life to caring for his daughter, being left to the wolves by the media in his most vulnerable time is simply unjust. Two wrongs do not make a right, and the complete lack of contact or compassion now seems utterly disproportionate.
Beyond her treatment of Thomas, Megan has also reportedly “poisoned” her relationship with Harry’s family in a similar manner. Despite being welcomed and supported by the Royal Family at first, Megan has now cut ties and accused them publicly of racism with unsubstantiated claims that have damaged the Monarchy’s global reputation. This further speaks to Megan’s tendency to burn bridges completely once she feels aggrieved, rather than make any attempt at reconciliation or understanding between interested parties.
While the stress of her new high-profile life may provide some context, it cannot excuse Megan’s actions towards her father and in-laws. Even sympathetic devil’s advocates struggle to find logical reasons for Thomas supposedly deserving such bitter treatment from his daughter. At its heart, Megan’s behavior follows a sad pattern of using and then mercilessly discarding people for simply being, in her mind, no longer useful to her escalating needs and desires. True compassion is nowhere to be seen.
As Thomas’ health declines and he faces the prospect of spending his final years alone and unacknowledged, the cruelty of Megan’s actions are brought into even sharper focus.basic human decency and forgiveness seem totally absent. At the very least, one would hope that in his 80th year especially, Harry may see fit to extend an olive branch and offer his new father-in-law some compassion. But based on their continued indifference, it seems the Sussexes have moved on and truly do not care what becomes of the man who devoted his life to raising and supporting Megan. How sad it is that the same daughter who once received so much love and care, can show her father nothing but bitterness at his most vulnerable point. Thomas Markle certainly did not deserve the fate Megan has decided for him in her pursuit of newer, greater alliances and public crusades. No parent should.
