Prince Andrew has reportedly been cut off from his royal allowance and private security detail. In an updated version of Robert Hardman’s book, Charles III: New King. New Court. The Inside Story, the royal biographer claimed that King Charles ordered the Keeper of the Privy Purse – who oversees responsibility for the Sovereign’s financial affairs, according to the royal family’s official website – to stop paying the prince’s $1.3 million yearly allowance and to stop paying for his personal security.
His security detail costs around seven figures.
Prince Andrew’s personal security detail is said to have been within the seven-figure range, according to the Daily Mail. The news outlet also reported that a source said Andrew was “no longer a financial burden on the King.” Others seem to think the same.
“Time for Andrew to scale back, downsize, and just tighten the belt like the rest of us Brits,” one person commented on the matter. “Finally!” another person wrote. “Nothing happens beyond a snail’s pace in the monarchy.”
Charles also wants Andrew to move out of his mansion.
It’s also no secret that Charles wants Andrew out of his $38 million mansion, the Royal Lodge, on the grounds of Windsor Castle, which could have pushed his hand in cutting off the allowance. In September 2024, the New York Post reported that the king was “losing patience” and wanted to relocate Andrew to a smaller property. The prince signed a 75-year lease for the mansion in 2003.
Andrew has to pay for his own protection now.
In the updated book, Robert revealed that Andrew will have to pay for the protection of historical art, furniture from the Royal Collection, and antiques after he didn’t accept a proposal to relocate from the Royal Lodge to the “considerably smaller property” of Frogmore Cottage. The residence is the former home of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
He claims he can ‘pay his own upkeep.’
The Daily Mail reported that Andrew has made clear that the king’s advisers have no grounds to force him to downsize. The news outlet also noted that the prince claims he can “pay for his own upkeep” through other sources of income that he supposedly has.
Andrew’s attitude creates issues.
Robert wrote that the overall outcome has “been a mixed blessing,” given that the matter is “resolved,” according to sources. However, the royal biographer also said that Andrew’s stance has “soured family relationships yet further,” which is no surprise, as he’s been deemed “The Andrew problem” because of the issues he’s caused the royal family.
“Andrew’s downfall was his absolute arrogance, and entitled attitude in the faces of everyday persons. Alongside his other messy participations,” one person quipped, while someone else agreed. “A very arrogant, pompous and deeply unpopular individual who is the architect of his own downfall by his foolish and adolescent behaviour.”
