That means they can now go forward into the national competition in January.

Sightseers at the 20,000-acre Norfolk estate said they always feel like royalty when they use the facilities at the visitor centre.

Contest nominees are graded by inspectors on a scale from Bronze to Diamond, using 101 criteria including cleanliness, decor, signs, accessibility and customer care.

Bosses at the royal seat said: “The Loo of the Year Awards aim to encourage the highest possible standards in all ‘away from home’ washrooms.

“We look forward to attending the National Awards in January.”

They said big improvements were made this year to ensure visitors have more accessible and better-quality facilities.

A fully accessible Changing Places toilet was added, with equipment including a hoist, curtain, adult changing benches and space for carers.

The improved loos also now offer baby changing facilities in both sets of toilets.

Mum Tina Hornagold commented online: “My daughter said she feels like royalty when she uses these toilets as they are so posh.”

And visitor Julie Stammers said: “Was there last Wednesday. I used the disabled toilet and was very impressed.”

Martin Dunn quipped: “Commonly known as the Royal Flush.”

Alison Jackson said the loos were so posh she had taken some snaps and added: “Stunning — the only conveniences I have ever taken photos of! Just beautiful.”

Previous winners include Wetherspoon’s, Gatwick airport, McDonald’s and Asda.
