Kate Middleton put a period on the long-awaited sentence of her 2024 cancer battle. On September 9, the Princess of Wales shared an “intimate” video announcing she was done with nine months of treatment. In doing so, a royal reporter says she saved the monarchy, showing an “incredible vulnerability” never before seen within the House of Windsor.
Kate Middleton’s ‘intimate’ moments with Prince William, kids captured
Throughout 2024, Kate Middleton has battled cancer, a type which Buckingham Palace never disclosed. Despite being out of the public eye for over half a year, she has allowed “intimate” moments of her life with Prince William and their kids; Princes George and Louis and daughter Princess Charlotte, to be made public.
However, a new, lengthy video showed an “incredible vulnerability” from the Princess of Wales, says News.com.au writer Daniela Elser. She writes, “The way the Princess of Wales has handled this year might just have saved the monarchy. Kate’s cancer has transformed the monarchy from an institution underpinned by a certain emotional austerity and remoteness into something powerfully human and mortal.”
Elser adds, “She didn’t have to film a deeply personal message, sitting on a Windsor garden bench, the background spring daffs a discordant bit of vibrancy, announcing she had cancer in March. In June, she didn’t have to pen and release a statement telling us she was having ‘good days and bad days.’ And she didn’t need to let a film crew into the Waleses’ most private spaces and home and family life to capture and show not only them but the prince and princess’ marriage in such an incredibly intimate way.”
“Kate has shown incredible vulnerability and a willingness to fight her fight in public view. In a way, no royal family member ever has before.”
Kate Middleton’s statement shares hope for the future
In a three-minute Instagram video, Kate Middleton allowed royal watchers into intimate moments with Prince William, their children, and her parents Carole and Michael Middleton. She also opened up further about her cancer journey. For a family that was notoriously tight-lipped for decades, this tactic was refreshing and necessary to ensure the vitality of the monarchy moving forward.
Kate wrote the following in a statement accompanying the video. “As the summer comes to an end, I cannot tell you what a relief it is to have finally completed my chemotherapy treatment. The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown.”
“The cancer journey is complex, scary, and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you. With humility, it also brings you face to face with your own vulnerabilities in a way you have never considered before. With that, a new perspective on everything,” she continued.
What’s next for the Princess of Wales?

As the year concludes, Kate Middleton’s comments point to a new direction for the Princess of Wales. Her health remains a priority. She wrote that her focus remains on being cancer-free. However, Kate revealed she has not fully recovered despite having completed her chemotherapy.
Therefore, she will undertake a few more engagements when she is able. However, the princess did not clarify the engagements or when they would occur.
However, she did write that moving forward, she would enter her life with a “renewed sense of hope and appreciation for life.” Until then, she said she would take each day as it comes.
