The 10 best shows and movies like XO Kitty worth watching while waiting for season 3 to release

Kitty from XO Kitty is in between images of Crush and Never Have I Ever

Upon finishing XO, Kitty season 2, fans can check out the best movies and TV shows that are similar to the Netflix show. After a year and a half long wait, the fan-favorite spinoff of To All The Boys has returned to Netflix for its sophomore season. The episodes are chaotic, romantic, and hilarious from the start to XO, Kitty’s cliffhanger ending.

Although season one included ten episodes, the streaming giant shortened the second season to just eight episodes. Considering they are half an hour each, it’s easy to binge-watch in one sitting. However, viewers might have to wait a while for any future episodes as XO, Kitty season 3 hasn’t been confirmed. Luckily, the romcom genre is vast, providing many great TV shows and movies to satiate the appetites of eager fans.

10The Summer I Turned Pretty (2023-Present)

A Jenny Han Romantic Drama Featuring A Love Triangle

9.7/10

The Summer I Turned Pretty Cover Image

Most viewers who enjoy the style of the romance in XO, Kitty will like Prime Video’s The Summer I Turned Pretty, which is based on Jenny Han’s most popular book series. The show follows a teenage girl named Belly who falls for two brothers, Jeremiah and Conrad, while spending the summer at the beach with her family.

While To All The Boys feels like the older sibling of XO, KittyThe Summer I Turned Pretty feels like a lovable cousin. As with most Jenny Han works, the Prime Video show has a distinct setting that influences the story and features a love triangle with two lovable options. Unlike XO, KittyThe Summer I Turned Pretty leans more into drama, offering a slightly more serious tone than its cousin series. This will appeal to those who don’t always want to deal with Kitty’s comedic hijinks and meddling.

9Tall Girl (2019)

A Netflix Rom-Com Movie With A Love Triangle

2/10

tallgirl

A movie that fans of XO, Kitty might want to check out is Netflix’s Tall Girl. The movie follows a 6’1” teen girl caught in a love triangle between her short best friend and a tall exchange student. XO, Kitty has never shied away from the cheesy tropes that fill romantic comedies, and Tall Girl has the same approach to storytelling. Viewers expecting something original and innovative should probably pass on Tall Girl, but those who enjoy the cliche elements of Kitty’s love story will undoubtedly enjoy the streaming giant’s rom-com movie.

The most significant difference between XO, Kitty and Tall Girl is that Jodi isn’t meant to be the likable protagonist who’s always the hero. In contrast, Kitty’s less favorable qualities are seen as the things that make her quirky and likable. Throughout Tall Girl, Jodi is deeply flawed and filled with insecurities that make her act in questionable ways; however, that’s part of the charm. The audience is supposed to like her because she’s imperfect, not in spite of it.

After finishing XO, Kitty, fans might want to check out Netflix’s other series, My Life With The Walter Boys. In the show, a teen girl named Jackie moves from New York City to Colorado to live with the Walter family after her parents are killed in a tragic accident. Like Kitty does in XO, Kitty, Jackie quickly finds herself romantically torn between a sweet love interest and an unexpected one.

While the love story is the main narrative in both shows, they also focus on the main character trying to cope with the parental loss, although Jackie loses both parents while Kitty loses her mom. This gives My Life With The Walter Boys more narrative similarities to XO, Kitty than many other films and shows. However, the shows differ in speed and tone, with XO, Kitty leaning toward faster romantic comedy while My Life With The Walter Boys leaning toward slower romantic drama.

Anyone who’s a fan of XO, Kitty should watch the show Never Have I Ever, which has similar genres, tropes, and themes. Never Have I Ever follows an Indian-American teen named Devi who hopes to improve her social status at school by having sex with the hottest boy in her class. Netflix’s XO, Kitty and Never Have I Ever include fundamental similarities to one another as teen romantic comedies with love triangles. However, the shows also have other parallels, like the exploration of young Asian teens raised in the United States who experience the division between their parents’ culture and the culture they reside in.

While Kitty tries to reconnect with the Korean culture at KISS, Devi lives as a first-generation Indian-American in California who is more separated from her parents’ culture. In addition to having a different perspective on her multi-cultural experience, Devi has a very distinct personality that will feel fresh to fans of XO, Kitty. The Never Have I Ever main character is hotheaded, impulsive, and (often) reckless, leading to hilariously chaotic situations.

Netflix has come out with a number of great romantic comedy TV shows with similarities to XO, Kitty; however, very few explore the experiences of LGBTQ+ main characters. That’s where Heartstopper comes in. Heartstopper follows the experience of a young, openly gay teen boy named Charlie who falls for his classmate, Nick. The show is a raw, romantic, hilarious, and sometimes tragic exploration of love and teenage life for LGBTQ+ teens, a subject that XO, Kitty also explores.

XO, Kitty characters also share other traits in common with Heartstopper’s cast. Charlie has personality traits similar to Kitty, such as a hopeless romantic outlook and quirky neuroticism. Tao is similar to Minho in that they’re arrogant jerks who secretly feel deeply. Nick and Q are both the cool jocks who are super sweet. The character parallels are endless, and both shows center on a group of friends rather than just one couple. However, viewers starting Heartstopper should be prepared for more emotional and serious moments than XO, Kitty, as the show fuses the genres of romantic comedy and drama.

Fans who enjoyed the Sapphic love triangle and Jin and Q’s competitiveness in the first half of XO, Kitty season 2 need to check out the Hulu rom-com, Crush. The 2022 film follows a girl named Paige who joins her high school track team to get closer to her crush, Gabby, but she quickly finds herself falling for AJ, her crush’s twin sister.

Unlike Kitty, who shows very little genuine interest in Praveena, Paige does seem to develop real feelings for both her love interests. This gives it a very similar field to the rest of XO, Kitty where the titular main character copes with two strong love interests at a time. The track aspect of the movie also ties in the competitiveness between Jin and Q. Crush is an excellent option for fans of XO, Kitty who want a faster watch rather than investing their time into a TV show.

4Extraordinary You (2019)

A K-Drama Romantic Comedy With Fantasy Elements

XO, Kitty is known for balancing the tropes of American and K-drama rom-coms, which makes it appealing to a wide audience. Although the most accessible shows similar to the Netflix series are created by Hollywood, the show Extraordinary You is a popular K-drama that will appeal to fans of XO, Kitty. The show follows a teen girl named Eun Dan-oh who lives with a congenital heart disease and pines for a boy who hates her. However, she decides to take her fate into her own hands after learning that she’s a minor character in a comic book called Secret.

Extraordinary You is perfect for XO, Kitty fans who enjoy the K-drama tropes and cinematography styles, as the show is packed with the best K-drama elements. However, it also has the added benefit of a unique visual style that enhances the fantasy aspects of the story, setting it apart from the Netflix show.

3The Half of It (2020)

A Sapphic Romantic Comedy That Explores Adolesence

Kitty and Yuri shippers need to watch the coming-of-age movie The Half of It after finishing XO, Kitty season 2. The film centers on a Chinese American student named Ellie who agrees to help the school jock, Paul, write a love letter to his crush Aster. However, she soon finds herself falling for Aster while developing a close friendship with Paul. The Netflix film combines the elements of romantic comedy and drama, creating a beautiful story that will resonate with a wide range of audiences, but especially LGBTQ+ XO, Kitty fans.

The Half of It includes many elements of screwball comedy while integrating more grounded explorations of adolescence. Rather than the expectations of family that Yuri faces in XO, Kitty, Ellie goes through a coming-out journey made more difficult by the town’s church. It’s a different but equally genuine experience for many LGBTQ+ young adults.

2Business Proposal (2022)

One of the most successful K dramas on Netflix is the romantic comedy TV show Business Proposal, and it will undoubtedly appeal to fans of XO, Kitty. The show follows Ha-Ri Shin, a young researcher for Go Food’s development team 1, who goes on a blind date disguised as her friend, not knowing that the date is the CEO of her company. Her situation gets complicated when he makes an interesting proposal.

Though any further details about the plot of Business Proposal would spoil the show, rest assured it’s chock-full of all the best K drama romcom tropes. Unlike other shows similar to XO, KittyBusiness Proposal focuses on adults instead of teenagers, giving it a more mature vibe. 1To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018)

The Movie That Started The To All The Boys Franchise

Any list of TV shows and movies similar to XO, Kitty would be incomplete without the movie that started the beloved franchise – To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. This Netflix film follows Lara Jean Song-Covey, the middle sister of the Song-Covey family, who writes love letters to every boy she ever loved, never intending to send them out. She asks her former crush, Peter Kavinsky, to fake date her to fend off the attention of her older sister Margot’s ex-boyfriend, Josh, after the titular letters get sent out to all their recipients.

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before has the same tone, pacing, and style as XO, Kitty, minus the K-drama components. It also shares narrative elements like a love triangle and a hopeless romantic main character. Plus, it shows Kitty when she’s younger, so fans of XO, Kitty can see how she’s grown over time. Additionally, unfamiliar fans get to see Kitty’s first foray into matchmaking — her setting up Peter and Lara Jean.
