XO, Kitty has never shied away from the cheesy tropes that fill romantic comedies, and Tall Girl has the same approach to storytelling. Viewers expecting something original and innovative should probably pass on Tall Girl, but those who enjoy the cliche elements of Kitty’s love story will undoubtedly enjoy the streaming giant’s rom-com movie.
The most significant difference between XO, Kitty and Tall Girl is that Jodi isn’t meant to be the likable protagonist who’s always the hero. In contrast, Kitty’s less favorable qualities are seen as the things that make her quirky and likable. Throughout Tall Girl, Jodi is deeply flawed and filled with insecurities that make her act in questionable ways; however, that’s part of the charm. The audience is supposed to like her because she’s imperfect, not in spite of it.
