The actress, in an interview, revealed that there was one instance where she decided to react as she would have, rather than sticking to what was written in the script.

Lively said that she might have been feeling the same thing that her character was feeling, but decided to react in the manner that she would, in a bit to represent a more authentic reaction to what was happening in the scene, which was, more often than not, something violent and untoward.

Lily Bloom’s reaction to her horrible situation might have been a little too real for the audience, and that was simply because Blake Lively had decided to take some liberties with the script. Lively reported:

I think that the reason that it feels very authentic is because it was as if I were experiencing this. What would my heart feel? What would my reactions be?

The idea for Blake Lively was to deliver a performance that was not necessarily in line with the script. This would allow the character that Lively was playing to be able to really feel that what was happening to her was wrong, even if the character did not feel like that was the case.

Even if the film received lukewarm reviews, and was marred in controversies, Blake Lively’s performance in the film received a lot of praise, owing to how delicate the film’s subject matter was. Blake Lively decided to make a pretty decent story (however with clunky dialogue) work pretty well for her, in a way that her portrayal of the character resonated with fans a lot.

Given the sensitive nature of the story and how easily it could have been mishandled by the narrative (well, it was definitely mishandled by the marketing), Lively managed to deliver a performance that really did work with fans and even got general audiences interested in the conversation surrounding the subject matter of the film. Blake Lively might have been embroiled in quite a legal matter thanks to the film, but it does not mean that the actress did not give the production her all.
