Warning: This article contains spoilers for Agatha All Along episode 4, “If I Can’t Reach You/Let My Song Teach You”
Marvel Studios’ introduction of the Green Witch in Agatha All Along may have changed the power scale of the MCU drastically, as her power could rival that of the Scarlet Witch. As well as giving more focus to Kathryn Hahn’s original Salem witch, Agatha Harkness, Marvel Television’s Agatha All Along has brought several other formidable magic-users into the MCU. Agatha All Along’s incredible cast showcases witches focused on potions, protection and divination, but also one who may have an incomprehensible level of as-yet-unseen power.
Agatha All Along’s premiere episode, “Seekest Thou the Road,” saw Aubrey Plaza debut as Rio Vidal, introduced as the MCU’s new Green Witch. While Rio Vidal’s identity as a Green Witch has since been questioned, with popular theories suggesting other powerful Marvel characters for Plaza, she has still had the chance to show off some of her impressive abilities. Agatha All Along episode 4, “If I Can’t Reach You/Let My Song Teach You,” may have teased Plaza’s Green Witch having even more power than Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff, the MCU’s Scarlet Witch.
Everything We Know About The Green Witch’s Powers
Green Witches Are Seemingly Essential To Surviving The Witches’ Road
Even though Rio Vidal has only appeared in two episodes of Agatha All Along, so far, she has demonstrated some of her incredible powers already. Green Witches are able to draw magical power from nature, meaning they specialize in Earth-based magic, which allows Rio Vidal to use plants to enhance spells, and control and manipulate the natural elements: earth, wind, fire and water. During her spar with Agatha Harkness in Agatha All Along episode 1, Rio Vidal showed off her incredible strength, agility and hand-to-hand fighting skills.
Even more impressive, however, is Rio Vidal’s ability to heal others, as she does for the knife wound on Agatha Harkness’ hand in Agatha All Along episode 1. She also seems to have some communion with the mystical Salem Seven, and has been noted to be pivotal in enabling a coven to survive the fabled Witches’ Road. Aubrey Plaza’s Rio Vidal, ignoring recent theories, has no counterpart in Marvel Comics, meaning Marvel Studios had a fantastic opportunity to make the Green Witch one of the most powerful characters in the MCU.
How The Green Witch’s Powers Compare To Scarlet Witch
Elizabeth Olsen Has Played The Scarlet Witch Since 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Rio Vidal is the second magic-user in the MCU to be named after a color, as the debut of the Green Witch comes a decade after the introduction of the Scarlet Witch in 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This draws obvious comparisons, and this is appropriate, as Rio Vidal has a level of power that could easily rival that of Wanda Maximoff. While the Green Witch has command over Earth’s elements, however, the Scarlet Witch is able to alter all of reality seemingly at will, so, currently, Rio Vidal doesn’t match up to Wanda.
Over the years, Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff has proven herself to be one of the strongest characters in the MCU. She was almost able to kill the Mad Titan, Thanos, single-handedly, had the power to destroy an Infinity Stone, and was able to erect the Hex around Westview, New Jersey, and control the minds of thousands of citizens in her sitcom-style world. More recently, she easily defeated Earth-838’s Illuminati, and was able to destroy every copy of the Darkhold across the multiverse. Rio Vidal hasn’t come close to demonstrating this level of power, but this could soon change.
How Rio Vidal Potentially Being Lady Death Affects Her Power-Ranking?
Theories Have Hinted At Aubrey Plaza Playing The MCU’s Lady Death
Although Aubrey Plaza’s MCU character has been named Rio Vidal, and she is a self-proclaimed Green Witch, there is still speculation that this identity may be a falsity. Instead, one of the most popular theories regarding her real identity has named her the MCU’s depiction of Lady Death. Agatha All Along has included many hints that this could be the case, and this would seriously increase Rio Vidal’s power-ranking, perhaps even making her more powerful than the Scarlet Witch, as Vidal may be able to simply control life and death as an immortal cosmic entity.
Rio Vidal’s ability to heal may stem from her being Lady Death, while she also wields the same shaped knife as Death does in a tarot card design used to promote the series. In Agatha All Along episode 4, Vidal literally climbs out of Sharon Davis’ grave to join Agatha Harkness’ coven on the Witches’ Road. Lady Death is one of Marvel Comics’ most formidable characters. She is completely untouchable, cannot be killed, and yet can kill and resurrect others at will. The Scarlet Witch has nothing on Lady Death, so this reveal would be game-changing for the MCU.
New episodes of Agatha All Along release every Wednesday at 6pm PT/9pm ET on Disney+.
