Erin Foster Dishes On ‘Nobody Wants This’ Season 2 – Plus Season 1 Secrets

Netflix’s breakout rom-com Nobody Wants This has captured audiences worldwide, thanks to its hilarious take on modern dating.  From Kristen Bell and Adam Brody’s sizzling chemistry as Joanne and Noah to the hilarious and accurate dialogue that feels oh-so-relatable, it’s no surprise it’s become a cult hit. And now, lead writer and creator, Erin Foster, is opening up about what the show’s success means to her, where the story idea came from and what viewers can expect now that Netflix has announced season 2, due to arrive in late 2025.

How Erin Foster found inspiration for ‘Nobody Wants This’

At a special screening of Nobody Wants This—attended by FIRST for Women—Erin Foster shared that her inspiration for the story—a romance between an atheist woman and a Jewish man—was rooted in her real-life experiences, but with one key difference: unlike Brody’s character in the show, Foster’s husband isn’t actually a rabbi.

“[Making him a Rabbi] helped me a lot, because it pulled away from my real life,” Foster said before adding that she was still “really nervous” about her in-laws seeing it.

“[But] I finally had a conversation with my father-in-law and I was just, like, ‘I should be honest. I’m writing a show. It’s called Shiksa,’ which is what it was called originally, and said this whole thing. And he was, like, ‘I love this idea. Just don’t make us seem poor.’”

Foster also shared that the show almost didn’t happen before Netflix picked it up.

“Everybody passed,” the writer revealed. “Hulu passed. FX passed. Apple Passed. Then, eventually, we went to Netflix with our last pitch, and honestly, I wanted them to pass. The whole thing had just been really tough.”

Eventually, though, Netflix said yes, and Foster’s show was officially in pre-production.

“I just really felt like I’d stepped into myself in this really cool way, and I was living my dream,” she revealed. “And it was wild for me. Three years ago, I felt like a fraud at a dinner party, And then I was, like, ‘Wow. I really do belong in this [writers’] room.’ It felt really good.”

The show took about three years to complete, between writing, filming and editing, with a writer and actor strikes thrown into the mix, but when it did, viewers all over the world were quick to fall in love with the story and cast.

“It surprised me when it became a monster hit,” says Foster. “I remember just thinking, ‘If people like it at all, I’m going to feel good about this.’”

The scandalous plotline cut from season 1 of ‘Nobody Wants This’

A very large subplot in season 1 is the friendship between Joanne’s sister Morgan (Justine Lupe) and Noah’s brother Sasha (Timothy Simons), but according to Foster, it was originally supposed to be much more than that.

“It was planned to be an affair,” she revealed. “[but] while we were shooting, it didn’t feel right. And so we kept pulling it back further and further and less and less, and by the end, it was just sort of like a weird friendship, and it was 10% of what it was always going to be.”

What to expect from ‘Nobody Wants This’ season 2

Kristen Bell and Justine Lupe in 'Nobody Wants This’

Given how big of a success season 1 of Nobody Wants This was, it’s no surprise that it got renewed for a second season, and while most of the details about it have been kept under wraps, Foster hinted at more group scenes featuring Sasha (Simons), Esther (Jackie Tohn) and Morgan (Lupe).

She also shared that they will have new showrunners this year and new additions to the crew.

But no matter what Foster has in store for season 2, we guarantee it will be just as fun and fresh as season 1, and we cannot wait to watch it.
