The writer though, has also courted quite a bit of controversy through her opinions on the transgender community that did not sit well with many people including Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson. Now, the novelist is hitting back publicly at the two stars by presenting a fresh defense to her affirmations.
The J.K. Rowling Controversy In A Nutshell
In 2020, J.K. Rowling sparked a huge debate online when she commented on an article in Devex that called for gender inclusivity when it came to the act of menstruation. The article which was supposed to create awareness of the biological function among transgender women, ignited Rowling into challenging the use of the phrase, ‘people who menstruate’ in a post on X.
The author in tongue-in-cheek fashion, stated her belief that the act of menstruation could only validated by being a woman. Her comments set the internet on overdrive with criticisms against the author for her apparent tone-deafness regarding transgender women and their identity in the world.
Following this backlash, the British writer went into full damage control mode to defend her words and reaffirm why she believed what she did. In a series of posts on X, Rowling elucidated her stance on why she felt that the identity of a woman was being challenged by transgender norms.
“I respect every trans person’s right to live any way that feels authentic and comfortable to them. I’d march with you if you were discriminated against on the basis of being trans. At the same time, my life has been shaped by being female. I do not believe it’s hateful to say so.”
The Ink Black Heart novelist has not only received a lot of criticism from activists and supporters of the transgender community, but has also been challenged by many celebrities in Hollywood including various Harry Potter stars for her controversial comments.
J.K. Rowling Hits Back At Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson With Fresh Evidence
Following J.K. Rowling’s controversial opinions regarding the transgender community, many celebrities joined the cause and lashed out at her for being apathetic to gender inclusivity through her comments that did not sit well with a lot of stars.

Among them were Harry Potter actors Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson who made their stance clear despite having gained huge fame through the author’s writing. In a stirring essay on The Trevor Project website, Radcliffe wrote,
“Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I. To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you.”
The writer shared an article on transgender in youth by Human Rights Campaign that talks about the complexities of gender that crop up in early childhood and the medical transitioning of children. In a response to a viewer asking her if she was expecting an apology from Radcliffe and Watson after this post, Rowling wrote a scathing direct response on X (via People).
“Celebs who cosied up to a movement intent on eroding women’s hard-won rights and who used their platforms to cheer on the transitioning of minors can save their apologies for traumatized detransitioners and vulnerable women reliant on single sex spaces.”
Both Radcliffe and Watson are yet to officially comment on the author’s latest comments. It now remains to be seen if Rowling has stirred the pot once again on social media by continuing to hold on to her viewers on gender.
