The Ideal Number of Seasons for 3 Body Problem, According to the Creators

This is the ideal number of seasons for Netflix’s new adaptation of 3 Body Problems, the creators reveal.

Netflix’s 3 Body Problem adaptation premiered recently, but the creators are already looking forward to the future. Coming from the creators of Game of Thrones, D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, and True Blood‘s Alexander Woo, all already familiar with adapting a multiple-book story, the trio addressed what the future would look like for the show.

3 Body Problem is already a huge hit on streaming, which could translate into further seasons. Before its release on Netflix, 3 Body Problem had its world premiere at the South by Southwest (SXSW) film festival, where it was very well received. The series is based on Liu Cixin’s bestselling trilogy, and has already been adapted into a series in China. However, the creators have big plans for the show.

Speaking to Collider, the showrunners expressed their hopes of turning the material into a three or four-season show. “There are three books. The first season roughly follows the arc of the first book, and the second season would probably roughly follow the second book. The third book is massive. It’s twice as long, I think, as the other two books, so maybe that’s one season, maybe it’s two,” Benioff said.

He continued, “But I think we’d need at least three, maybe four seasons to tell the whole story. It’s a beautiful ending. I think all three of us thought that the last page of Liu Cixin’s epic was maybe the best final image we’d encountered in a sci-fi saga like this. It’s incredibly moving and mind-blowing, and so we’re desperate to get to the end. That means, hopefully, if enough people watch it that Netflix will renew us and give us a couple more years.”

Is 3 Body Problem Renewed for Season 2?

3 Body Problem Season 1 premiered on Mar. 21, 2024, and it consists of eight episodes. The series stars Benedict Wong, Eiza González, and Sir Jonathan Pryce, Tsai Chin, John Bradley, Liam Cunningham, Jovan Adepo, Rosalind Chao, Ben Schnetzer, and Eve Ridley. The show currently boasts a Certified Fresh 79% rating from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with a similar score of 80% from the audience.

Netflix hasn’t officially confirmed whether 3 Body Problem will return with Season 2 yet. However, the show was a massive success. The Netflix show was the most-streamed title overall in the U.S. with movies and TV series from all streaming platforms. Although Netflix hasn’t officially renewed the show, this is an encouraging start, as Benioff and Weiss have said they’re hoping it to be just as “big” as Game of Thrones.

The showrunners already know what they want to do, telling the same outlet: “For Season 2, we’ve got better than a rough idea. We’re much further along with that plan than rough idea stages. The farther away things get, the hazier your view of them is. But in the third book, there are so many amazing landmarks, in terms of scenes and situations and events, that we can see pretty clearly, that we know. We’re not completely sure how our characters are gonna get to that place, but we know they gotta get to that place because that place is the reason we picked these books up and wanted to adapt them in the first place.”

3 Body Problem Season 1 is streaming on Netflix.
