Subpar Projects From 2 Legendary Filmmakers Inspired a Major Decision in Mad Max Director George Miller’s Prequel Film ‘Furiosa’

After the experimental projects of legendary filmmakers failed expectations, George Miller made a major decision for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

Subpar Projects From 2 Legendary Filmmakers Inspired a Major Decision in Mad Max Director George Miller’s Prequel Film ‘Furiosa’

“Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015) reignited the post-apocalyptic genre with its action and vision. This was the fourth movie in the Mad Max franchise and the first since 1985.  Directed by the creative mind of George Miller, it starred Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron in leading roles.

The film’s success led to calls for more, and those calls are being answered with “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” a prequel focusing on Theron’s character’s earlier adventures. However, Theron won’t be reprising the role and there’s a solid reason behind this.

George Miller Did Not Go The De-Aging Route For Furiosa Despite Martin Scorsese And Ang Lee Doing So

George Miller’s new movie Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will take fans to the early story of Imperator Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron in the previous movie. Theron’s performance as the character stunned fans and thus were very excited when the project was announced.

In a previous interview with Empire Online, Miller revealed that Theron was not going to reprise her role, which left fans confused. This decision made sense as the prequel focuses on the character’s twenties. However, given how far the technology has come, de-aging a character is not as far-fetched as it might sound.

Legendary filmmakers Martin Scorsese and Ang Lee introduced younger versions of the actors in The Irishman and Gemini Man respectively. However, there was a big problem with it; most of the fans were not very impressed with this experiment, with some even calling it a “waste of money“.
“As time went on, I began thinking, ‘Oh, maybe we could do de-ageing. Then I watched really masterful filmmakers like Ang Lee and Martin Scorsese, doing ‘Gemini Man’ and ‘The Irishman,’ and I saw that it hadn’t been licked. All you’d be watching is, ‘Look how well the technology works.’ It would not have been persuasive.” – George Miller to Empire
Miller wanted to avoid the unconvincing CGI. If filmmakers like Scorsese and Lee can get something wrong, anyone can. Thus, instead of relying on CGI to make Theron look younger, he decided to cast someone who already fits the bill. It is way easier.

What is Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga About?

Furiosa is a prequel to the action-packed Mad Max: Fury Road. The talented Anya Taylor-Joy will play the role of Imperator Furiosa before she teams up with Mad Max.

Expect a return to the desolate wasteland filled with high-octane car chases and thrilling stunts. Chris Hemsworth joins the cast in this George Miller-directed adventure that will explore how Furiosa became the fierce warrior we know.
