While 3 Body Problem hasn’t scored a season renewal at this time, production won’t take long to begin on a potential Season 2 if Netflix moves forward with renewing the series.

Now streaming on Netflix, 3 Body Problem is a new adaptation of the Chinese novel by Liu Cixin. It comes in part from David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the creators of Game of Thrones, HBO’s adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s literary works, as they developed the Netflix series with Alexander Woo. Speaking about the future of the show with GamesRadar’s Inside Total Film podcast, Woo stated how the team is hopeful that the show will be able to span several seasons to allow them to finish the story they want to tell. He also confirmed that there’s already a game plan in mind for Season 2.

“Well, there’s three novels in the trilogy,” Woo said. “The novels get longer and longer so I wouldn’t say it maps out exactly to three. We have some really strong ideas about what to do in a Season 2, and then it’s a little hazier down the line. But we want to get to the end.”

Weiss jumped in to add that Season 2 hasn’t been officially ordered just yet, but the good news for fans is that work on a potential second season has still begun. This means that the 3 Body Problem team will be ready to start shooting a second season pretty quickly after a renewal order comes in, which would cut down on the wait for Season 2 to arrive on Netflix.

“We don’t have a second season, but we need to keep pushing forward full steam ahead as if we did,” Weiss said. “Because if we do get a second season, we’ll need to hit the ground running in terms of pre-production and production to get it out to people in some kind of reasonable time.”

Weiss and Benioff have also said that they hope that this new series gets to be as “big” as Game of Thrones. It remains to be seen just how popular the show will become, and its viewership numbers will certainly be a major factor in whether Netflix will commit to a second season. The series is notably expensive to produce, reportedly coming with a higher budget than what was given to the final season of Game of Thrones over at HBO.

3 Body Problem is streaming on Netflix.
