"I just don't get why he's so popular": Ryan Reynolds Has Some Real Haters on the Internet Despite Deadpool Fame

Throughout his career, Ryan Reynolds has carved out a niche for his comedic skills and has earned fans’ love and attention. However, like many movie stars, he has also faced setbacks with projects that failed to resonate with the audience. Despite that, he has emerged as one of Hollywood’s most cherished and popular stars, capable of drawing significant audiences to the box office.

However, there remains a segment of critics who refuse to cut the 47-year-old actor any slack as they perceive Reynolds as lacking in talent and question his enduring fame.

Ryan Reynolds Continues to be a Subject of Internet Scrutiny

Despite achieving critical acclaim and success with hits like the Deadpool series and Free Guy, Ryan Reynolds hasn’t been immune to occasional flops. Such films often garner negative reviews from critics and the audience.

However, the criticism of the Deadpool star has prevailed with SubReddits providing a platform for Reynolds’ critics to gather and ponder his Hollywood success. One SubReddit, Unpopular Opinions, has become a hub for such discussions.

In one thread, a Reddit user shared their perspective on Reynolds, suggesting that while he might be a nice person, they believe he “plays the SAME person in every single thing he does,” even in his advertisements. They further expressed confusion over his widespread popularity despite not being funny and always doing similar movies.

“I just don’t get why he’s so popular. He is a very attractive person and I’m willing to bet that has a huge majority in why he’s so popular, but he just isn’t funny and every movie he’s in is just the same.”
Others, who joined in the conversation, echoed similar sentiments, stating that Reynolds lacks range as an actor and has been taking similar roles. However, many also defended him, stating that sometimes the films “need those types of people” as they make it so much more funny. Others also noted that he’s not alone in Hollywood in playing repetitive characters.

Ryan Reynolds’ Reflection on His Career in Hollywood

Ryan Reynolds has shared that he has made a career out of making fun of himself, as he shared during an interview, “I think it’s more about just laughing at myself, not laughing at other people, necessarily, that are involved in a project.”  He described it as the idea of turning negative experiences into positive outcomes.

The Adam Project star has certainly not shied away from doing so, particularly when it comes to his 2011 superhero film, Green Lantern. Based on the DC superhero of the same name, the movie has been one of the biggest box office bombs of all time.

The actor has constantly acknowledged that the film was a disaster, and even shared that he hated watching the movie’s premiere. “Sitting in that premiere, watching that… oh my God, it’s tough,” he said before adding, “It was crazy. It was an odd feeling.”

With better opportunities and successful projects, Reynolds has also acknowledged the privilege of being a successful Hollywood star. “I get to mostly choose who I work with. And I get to work with my friends,” he said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He has two films scheduled for release this year, the fantasy comedy IF and the much-awaited Deadpool & Wolverine.

IF is set to release on May 17, 2024.

Deadpool & Wolverine is set to release on July 26, 2024.
