“I discovered that in WWE”: Dave Bautista Credits His Wrestling Years for a Nuanced Dune 2 Performance That Most Fans Don’t Know About

Dave Bautista has made a seamless transition from the world of professional wrestling to that of acting. While his origins may lie in professional wrestling, he has proven himself to be a versatile and talented actor in his own right. Bautista’s ability to embody diverse characters and deliver compelling performances has earned him recognition and praise in the film industry.

As previously noted, Dave Bautista was part of the WWE system for several years, from 2002 to 2010 before returning for two stints in 2014 and 2019, and he would then end his professional wrestling career following his loss to Triple H at WrestleMania 35.

While speaking to io9, Dave Bautista described the intense anxiety he felt backstage before entering the ring, and how it dissipated as soon as he stepped out into the lights and the roar of the crowd. This release of anxiety allowed him to fully embrace his performance in Dune: Part Two.
So, for me, screaming for me is just another way to get rid of my anxiety. I’ve always known that about myself. I discovered that in WWE and I just let it all out. On one side of the curtain in WWE, before I came out, I was dry heaving. I was a nervous wreck. I was a mess, and I was always thinking,
“God, everything’s going to go wrong. I’m not ready. I’m not warmed up enough. Oh man, I don’t know what to do.”

He added,

As soon as I hit that curtain, walked out the curtain, lights, music, [crowd roars]—anxiety gone. And it’s the same with this. So it just allowed me the opportunity to just shake that anxiety, and then I can just kind of slowly transform to this performance. But again, I mean, just the richness of the character, the layers of the character and the support and encouragement from Denis, he just made this very easy for me.”
Bautista also credits the depth of his character and the support from Denis Villeneuve, the director, for making his current role easier for him. His role as Rabban proved he was born to play the character and fans appreciated him for that as well.

Dave Bautista has expressed openness to starring in more superhero films in the future. While he has concluded his journey as Drax, he remains a fan of the superhero universe and is willing to explore opportunities in both Marvel and DC. Bautista stated to Gizmodo, “I love the universe — the superhero universe, I love it. I’m a fan. So Marvel or DC, if they call, I would answer the phone. And if the role makes sense, I’d be all over it.”

Additionally, Bautista expressed interest in playing a larger, different, and more significant character, particularly a villainous role.
“Maybe a deeper role. I’d love to have the opportunity to play, like, an ominous villain in the superhero universe.”
While nothing has been confirmed, there is speculation that Bautista could potentially land a significant role in James Gunn’s new DCU.
