Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire fleshed out the hidden history of the Monsterverse by exploring a Titan war from centuries before the franchise began.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire explored a Titan war, one that took place thousands of years before the Monsterverse chronologically began. The Monsterverse timeline of the Godzilla and Kong movies is certainly expansive, ranging from the stories set in the 20th century, like Kong: Skull Island and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, to the present-day stories of Godzilla x Kong. However, more so than any other story in the franchise, Godzilla x Kong explores the ancient history of the Titans, adding new mythology to the Monsterverse.

While a Godzilla x Kong sequel is yet to be confirmed, it is likely that a continuation would further explore the history of the Titans that dwell both on the surface and in Hollow Earth. This would follow on from the lore explored in Godzilla x Kong, which provided a lot more context to the histories of both Titans and their enemies. Throughout Godzilla x Kong‘s exploration of this Titan war, the highly-ranked Monsterverse movie allowed the franchise to deepen the history of its titular characters intriguingly while linking them to the terrifying new villain: the Skar King.

Godzilla & Skar King Went To War Millennia Before Godzilla x Kong

Rebecca Hall’s Ilene Andrews explained the history between Godzilla and the Skar King.

Midway through Godzilla x Kong‘s story, Ilene – alongside her daughter Jia, Titan vet Trapper, and conspiracy theorist Bernie – discovers a hidden tribe of Iwi people living in Hollow Earth. There, Ilene is shown a mural that depicts a prophecy tying the past and future of the Monsterverse together. This is where Ilene and her companions find out about the Skar King and the threat he poses to the surface world.

Godzilla waged war on the Skar King and his followers, driving them back to Hollow Earth and protecting the planet.

It is revealed that, millennia ago, the Skar King desired to take over the surface world and become the sole ruler of both Titans and humans. However, the Skar King faced opposition from Godzilla. Godzilla waged war on the Skar King and his followers, driving them back to Hollow Earth and protecting the planet. This war explains why Godzilla is so dedicated to stopping the Skar King again in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, as the former Titan is aware of the threat the latter poses due to having fought him in the past.

How Godzilla Defeated Skar King In The Original Titan War

Godzilla used the unexplored areas of Hollow Earth to defeat the Skar King.

After waging war on the Skar King in the past, Godzilla eventually managed to defeat the evil Titan. While it is not shown how Godzilla managed this, it is explained by Ilene with other elements of the film’s story providing context to the plot point. At some point after their war began, Godzilla managed to trap the Skar King and his tribe in the Subterranean Realm. The Subterranean Realm is a part of Hollow Earth that is incredibly difficult to find, and thus equally difficult to escape from.

This part of Hollow Earth is mostly unexplored by the workers at Monarch, explaining how the Skar King and the Iwi tribe remained hidden. The only way out of the Subterranean Realm is via the use of several portals, protected by the Iwi and, formerly, Mothra. Given the difficulty of escaping the Subterranean Realm, Godzilla trapping the Skar King and his army in this area of Hollow Earth led to their demise until Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire saw the Skar King assaulting the Iwi tribe to reach the surface world.

Why Skar King Wanted To Conquer The Surface World

Concerning why the Skar King wanted to conquer the surface world, the answer is predominantly put down to his tyrannical nature. The Skar King is constantly depicted as having a villainous, dominating personality over the other Titans under his rule, those that oppose him like Godzilla and Kong, or the humans that live on Earth. The Skar King desires to become exactly that, a king to all who live on Earth. This is also driven by his failure to become so in the past, also fueling his desire for revenge against Godzilla and the other Titans who opposed him.

This sees him wage another war against the Iwi tribe, Mothra, Godzilla, and Kong. In the final act of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the Skar King almost succeeds in his mission by taking one of the Iwi portals to Rio de Janeiro. Using the power of Shimo, an ice-based Titan under his control, the Skar King sought to bring about another ice age on the surface to subjugate humans and Titans alike. However, the Skar King is stopped thanks to the combined efforts of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire‘s titular duo, Mother, a liberated Shimo, and Suko.
