Despite Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire‘s reviews being lackluster, the movie opened to $10 million in domestic preview grosses on Thursday, a record high for the Monsterverse. Godzilla x Kong went on to make $194 million worldwide in its opening weekend, surpassing Dune: Part Two‘s $182 million to become the biggest opening weekend of the year so far. Its domestic opening weekend of $80 million was also the Monsterverse franchise’s best opening in 10 years, and its second-best opening ever behind 2014’s Godzilla ($93.2 million).

After only four days in theaters, Godzilla x Kong‘s box office roared past a major global milestone by passing the $200 million mark worldwide, $20 million of which was from IMAX screens alone. This also put the Monsterverse franchise over the $2 billion mark as a whole. This strong performance has also put Godzilla x Kong on track to surpass its predecessor, Godzilla vs. Kong, which made $470 million worldwide during its theatrical run.
