Elizabeth Hurley in Strictly ConfidentialLIONSGATE

Elizabeth Hurley’s new movie Strictly Confidential has quickly been branded “weird” for one reason: it’s directed by her son, and it features a “steamy” sex scene.

Sex scene discourse is cyclical, whether it’s debates about the inclusion of intimacy coordinators (like Michael Caine saying he “doesn’t understand” the need for them) or viewers – often of the Gen-Z variety – believing they’re unnecessary in the first place.

However, if you’re gonna have sex in your movie, most people agree that any familial involvement is a bit weird. In September last year, Ethan Hawke said he “couldn’t care less” about directing his daughter Maya Hawke’s intimate scenes, which sparked its own debate.

Now, the trailer for Hurley’s next film has reignited the conversation – mainly due to its “oedipal” complex.

Elizabeth Hurley’s son directed her movie with a “steamy” scene

Strictly Confidential is directed and written by the star’s son Damian Hurley. “On the anniversary of Rebecca’s (Lauren McQueen) death, Mia (Georgia Lock) returns to the Caribbean paradise where she and her best friend shared her final days. As Mia sets out to unravel the mysterious events of her passing, old passions rise, new secrets are uncovered and Mia is pulled into a seductive world of sex, betrayal, and murder,” its synopsis reads.

Notably, Hurley’s character can be seen making out with another woman in the trailer, and the idea of her son directing that scene has given people the “ick.”

“I never would have thought Liz Hurley getting it on with another woman would give me the ick, but here we are,” one user joked. “Freud would’ve had a field day with this one,” another tweeted.

“Oedipus phoned. He’d like a word,” another posted. “An Oedipal fire burns in this boy,” a fourth wrote. “Why is this shot/lit like something from the 5th page of Brazzers,” a fifth joked. “I am genuinely & completely at a loss for what is more upsetting to me: Directing your mother’s sex scenes or allowing your son to direct your sex scenes,” another tweeted.

In an earlier Instagram post, Damian wrote: “I want to worship @ElizabethHurley1 who, during the making of my first ever short film back in 2010 (when I was 8) promised me she’d be in my first feature; true to her word, the minute this film was greenlit, Mama dropped everything and raced out to the beautiful Caribbean to help. Working together was a dream.

“This has genuinely been the most incredible experience, both professionally and personally. I’ve made lifelong friends and learned many valuable lessons.”

Strictly Confidential will be released on April 5. In the meantime, you can check out our list of all the best new movies to stream in March.
