90s Supernatural Series Is Your Next Binge Guilty Pleasure

Many young girls grew up watching Charmed. It first aired in 1998 and continued for eight seasons until the show ended in 2006. However, despite its popularity, there are plenty of people out there who have never seen this series.

You Say Witch Like It’s A Bad Thing

If you’re one of the people who managed to overlook Charmed, it might be time to try it out. The story follows three sisters who come from a line of female witches who fight the forces of evil. Though they don’t know about their powers and lineage initially, a strange book up in the attic of their family home provides them with all they need to know, including the activation spell for their magic.

The Power Of Three

Each sister has a unique ability that they can use when needed, from premonitions to astral projection. During the most dire moments, the three sisters can come together and combine their abilities into The Power of Three. The story might sound rather cheesy, but you may be surprised by how well the TV show did.

An Ever-Growing Magical Cast

The cast is one of the reasons Charmed did as well as it did right out of the gate. The three original sisters were played by Holly Marie Combs, Alyssa Milano, and Shannon Doherty, later joined by their long-lost sister, played by Rose McGowan. Throughout the show, some big-name actors also appeared, such as Kaley Cuoco (Big Bang Theory), Julian McMahon (Fantastic Four), and Drew Fuller (The Ultimate Gift).

Even The Weak Seasons Are Beloved

When Charmed first aired, it was given mostly favorable reviews. Its Metacritic score was 61 out of 100. Throughout the eight seasons, the story lost its way on occasion, but it always came back.

Shows sometimes drag on further than necessary, leading to final seasons that are lackluster and weak in their story. That wasn’t the case with this 90’s TV show. Even the last season earned an average audience review of around 80 percent.

The Costume That Changed Everything

That wasn’t the only drama in the show, including Alyssa Milano refusing to ever wear “skimpy” outfits again on the show following an episode in which she was turned into a mermaid. The addition of Kaley at the end, as the new witch Billie shown to be more powerful than the main three sisters, created further drama amongst the crew and angered some of the fans as it was a blatant attempt to keep the show going without the main cast.

An All-New, All-Different Revivial

Because of the popularity of the original Charmed, there was a revival series that aired 12 years after the last season. It went by the same name but had none of the cast return. Unlike the original, it didn’t do nearly as well, though it ran for four seasons and has an audience score of 29 percent.

According to fans, the reboot is missing much of the original depth and, if you’ll excuse the pun, charm that the original one had. The reboot aired on CW and featured actresses Melonie Diaz (Fruitvale Station), Sarah Jeffery (Shades of Blue), and Madeleine Mantock (Into the Badlands).

Cheesy But We Like It

Guilty pleasures are generally things we know aren’t good for us, but we love them anyway. This fits Charmed on some level, as it is a rather absurd and embarrassing series to watch.

However, if you do end up loving the show, don’t feel too bad. With an audience average score of 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, you aren’t the only one to watch this show, even if no one will admit to it in real life.

Start Your Binge

Ready to start binging? You can find all the seasons of Charmed on Peacock. With eight seasons and 178 episodes, it’s a show that will keep you entertained for at least a few weeks. When you’re done with the show, you can check out some of the games, novels, and comics that came about due to the show’s popularity.
