The cliffhanger ending of Virgin River season 6 hinted at a tragic fate for one key character, but its centrality and some clues scattered throughout the season might have also revealed how that isn’t the case yet. Throughout Virgin River’s six seasons, the romantic drama established itself as a TV show with happily ever after endings rather than tragedies. While some deaths were inevitable to set up Mel’s story – like Sarah’s and Mark’s – all the other possibly sad storylines didn’t end in tragedy unless they were signposted as such since the character’s introduction, like Lilly’s storyline in Virgin River proved.

Charmaine has been the main antagonist to Jack and Mel’s love story since the beginning of Virgin RiverHer lies and machinations kept Jack and Mel apart for two seasons, but finding love eventually made her relationship with Mel and Jack better as she isn’t interested anymore in driving a wedge between them. This effectively makes her a crucial character who is now closer to Mel and Jack, making the heavily hinted tragic ending she could have suffered based on Virgin River season 6’s cliffhanger finale out of character for the romantic drama.

Virgin River Season 6’s Finale Implies Jack Found Charmaine Dead – But It’s Unlikely For The Show’s Themes

Charmaine Being Unconscious As Her Twins Are Kidnapped Is A More Likely Development

Charmaine’s storyline in Virgin River season 6 saw her finally not obstructing Mel and Jack’s love, instead welcoming their help in her fight for sole custody against Calvin and offering her services as a hairdresser for Mel on her and Jack’s big day. Charmaine’s disappearance when she should have joined Mel’s wedding party worried Mel, but the fact Charmaine messaged her about something coming up didn’t fully raise the alarm. However, once she stopped answering everybody, Jack had to check up on her, and Virgin River season 6’s ending didn’t clarify what he found except for showing Jack’s shocked expression.

Virgin River’s upbeat narrative would darken too much if Charmaine were to be killed off, making her being only hurt likelier.

Mel conveniently reminding Jack and the public how Charmaine was a no-show at their wedding and was also fighting Calvin for sole custody of their twins heavily hinted that whatever befell them had to do with the Virgin River villain from seasons 1 and 2. However, it’s unlikely Virgin River season 6 killed off Charmaine in the season finale. Indeed, Virgin River’s upbeat narrative would darken too much if Charmaine were to be killed off, as she was always a key character and now she was even on good terms with Mel and Jack, making her being only hurt likelier.

Calvin Attacking Charmaine Sets Him Up As Virgin River Season 7’s Main Villain

Calvin Was Already A Villain In Virgin River’s Earlier Season But Was Forgotten

Whatever happened to Charmaine, there’s a good chance for the perpetrator to be Calvin. He had after all an interest in not losing custody of his twins, and he threatened both Charmaine and Jack when he intervened. Moreover, Virgin River’s earlier seasons already established Calvin as the town’s biggest villain. After all, he kidnapped Mel and Jack and put someone in Jack’s Bar to sabotage it, proving himself more than capable of returning as the drama’s main villain, after Melissa’s arrival let her take over as Virgin River’s worst villain.

Virgin River’s fentanyl business passing hands after Virgin River season 3 hit Calvin’s status as a villain, making Melissa much scarier.

Calvin taking back his sons after hurting Charmaine can reestablish his status as a major villain in Virgin River season 7. While he kept the reputation after Virgin River seasons 1 and 2, Mellissa’s involvement in all nefarious purposes made Calvin inevitably look like an easier villain to handle. His actions in Virgin River season 6 can finally place him back as a villain in his own right that needs to be defeated.
