BEFORE finding fame as popular TV chef, Gino D’Acampo had a far less glamorous past which saw him involved in a serious crime.

At one point the beloved star burgled the home of 80s singer Paul Young.

Back in 1998 a 21-year-old Gino D’Acampo broke into 80s singer Paul Young’s home.

The I’m A Celebrity champ was a young unknown waiter at the time.

He stole Paul’s £4,000 guitar collection, alongside a platinum disc.

Gino was caught after his DNA matched tests on cigarette butts he had dropped in the star’s bedroom in Mill Hill, North London.

He stood before a judge in 1998, and was sentenced under his real name, Gennaro.

He was sentenced to two years in jail.

When talking about his conviction he said on his website: “It was while in England that an involvement with the ‘wrong people’ landed him a spell at Her Majesty’s Pleasure but the sojourn resolved his mind and set him on a new course to succeed.”

What has Paul said about the break-in?

Paul has chosen to forgive Gino for his past crimes against him.

In 2011 he told the Evening Standard that Gino had contacted him to personally apologise before he went on I’m A Celebrity in 2009.

He said: “I don’t hold it against him. He said it was bad and he apologised, and I did get most of the stuff back. “

“Maybe he needed his wrist slapping and he got that. He said he was in a terrible place at that time and wanted to turn his life around.”

However, in August 2018 Paul revealed the impact the burglary had on his life, as music from his late wife Stacey was lost.

Speaking to The Mirror, Paul said: “When Stacey went there were certain bits of music I never got back.

“Let’s say that – and that hurt me.”

Talking about Gino now, he explained: “He gets enough stick on social networking – he doesn’t need my help as well.”
