Seems like Hugh Jackman’s X-Men co-star would have gotten his own movie based on fat-shaming!
Although a lot of the mutants from Marvel comics did manage to make it to the X-Men project for the screens, not all of them got the true recognition they deserved, with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine being a major exception.
But while the others were simply sidelined, some of them were actually told that they had the potential to get their own solo movie for their respective mutant.
One of these was The Blob, who was played by Kevin Durand in 2009’s Origins: Wolverine. As the actor revealed, he was promised a solo movie for his character, with a plotline that basically hinged on fat-shaming because of the mutant’s characteristics.
However, in a disappointing turn of events, that promise never really managed to pan out, let alone make it to the screens.
X-Men‘s Kevin Durand Was Supposed to Have His Own Solo Movie
Back in 2009, when X-Men Origins: Wolverine came out, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes actor Kevin Durand was seen playing the comic character Fred Dukes in live-action, and doing a rather impressive job at that, as was observed in the movie.
Because of how remarkably he made sure to embody and portray his character with all the fat suits and stuff, the actor got promised that this won’t be his last gig as the mutant. In fact, as he claims, he was even seemingly supposed to get his own solo movie.
During a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Durand shared the same, saying: I really should be because I remember when we were doing the scenes in Wolverine, he just kept saying ‘You’re going to end up with your own movie.’
Moreover, The Strain actor was supposed to appear as his respective mutant in James Mangold‘s The Wolverine as well.

As he shared during the same interview: He really wanted me to come back and do the next Wolverine.
That being said, he most certainly would have scored a role in Hugh Jackman‘s solo Wolverine film from 2013. But things didn’t quite turn out all too well for him.
According to what Durand further shared about the ideas they held for his next appearance: The Blob was going to be the sumo wrestling champion in Japan when he goes to Tokyo but it never panned out.

However, in an unfortunate turn of events, those ideas could never really see the light of day, and the plotline that would have pretty much hinged on fat-shaming (because of his story) resulted in yet another untold story left behind in the drafts.
But while that’s that, Durand has made his thoughts clear on returning to reprise his role.
Kevin Durand Gets Candid About Returning to MCU
For those who may not know, Durand’s character Frederick “Fred” Dukes saw his dormant superhero powers manifesting themselves as soon as he hit puberty, resulting in him transforming into “an extra-strong freak,” as he called himself in X-Men #3.
Because of this storyline, his solo movie would have inevitably hinged on fat-shaming as well, considering how even the character has been heavily criticized over the years on the same and has even been accused of propagating fat phobia.
That said, it may be one of the reasons behind his solo film never panning out.
However, despite such factors seemingly posing a problem to his getting his next gig in the MCU, Durand has made it evident that nothing could stop him from returning and reprising his villainous role of the extra-heavy mutant.
As the actor himself shared during the same interview: I’m game. I’m always game.
That said, it would be quite entertaining to see him return and reprise his iconic role in future projects from the MCU — hoping that the franchise does end up creating something for him.
Until then, you can stream X-Men Origins: Wolverine and The Wolverine on Disney+.
