X-Men ’97’s Grim Future: Harrowing MCU Theory Portends Catastrophe
One major X-Men ’97 theory suggests that Cable’s mission in episode 5, “Remember It,” may be futile, spelling bad news for the remaining X-Men team.

One shocking MCU theory suggests that Cable’s mission in X-Men ’97 episode 5 may bring about even more danger for the remaining X-Men team. After previously voicing Gambit in X-Men: The Animated Series, Chris Potter returned to the animated universe to voice Cable in X-Men ’97 episode 5, “Remember It”. This saw the time-traveling mutant antihero deliver a warning to Madelyne Pryor, his biological mother, in Genosha moments before a devastating attack by giant Sentinel robots. “Remember It” marked the tragic ending for several prominent X-Men and mutant characters, but Cable’s appearance in the episode suggests times may be changing.
Episode 5 marked Cable’s first appearance in the new-and-improved X-Men ’97, continuing the story from X-Men: The Animated Series, which ran for five seasons between 1992 and 1997. X-Men ’97 has already explored Cable’s backstory as the son of Scott Summers’ Cyclops and Jean Grey’s clone, Madelyne Pryor, as episode 3, “Fire Made Flesh,” ended with Bishop taking Nathan Summers to find a cure for his techno-organic virus in the future, where he would eventually become Cable. Cable’s appearance in X-Men ’97 episode 5, however, spells danger for the X-Men, particularly if one major theory turns out to be true.
The Watcher’s Appearance In X-Men ‘97 Episode 5 Is A Mystery
The Watcher Appeared In A Blink-And-You’ll-Miss-It Moment

As well as Cable’s brief cameo in X-Men ’97 episode 5, another surprising Marvel character also appeared prior to the Sentinels’ attack on Genosha. Potentially creating a link to the MCU proper, the Watcher can be seen in the sky in the moments before Magneto and Rogue’s inauguration gala begins. This shocking appearance perhaps foreshadowed the tragedy that was to come, and while the Watcher’s cameo hasn’t been explained, his appearance in the skies above Genosha may have teased X-Men ’97 repeating a massive storyline from Marvel Studios’ animated What If…? series, in which the Watcher plays a major role.
Cable May Be Trying To Break An Absolute Point Like Doctor Strange
Doctor Strange Broke An Absolute Point To Save Christine Palmer In What If…?

In What If…?, Jeffrey Wright’s Watcher oversees many game-changing alternate stories from the MCU’s history, but one of these storylines from What If…? season 1 bears some similarities to X-Men ’97 episode 5’s events. What If…? season 1, episode 4, “What If… Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?,” saw a variant of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange transform into Strange Supreme in an attempt to save the life of Christine Palmer and break an Absolute Point. One theory posed by Reddit user Aromatic_Tomorrow406 suggests that the attack on Genosha in X-Men ’97 may also be an Absolute Point.
Note: Absolute Points are events that cannot and must not be altered, as doing so will impact histor significantly, usually for the worse.
Cable’s appearance in X-Men ’97 episode 5 saw him travel through time to seemingly try and stop the attack on Genosha, but he was ultimately too late. His declaration that he was “too late” suggests this wasn’t the first time he had attempted to change these events, meaning he may have traveled back several other times, just as Doctor Strange Supreme did in What If…? season 1 while trying to save Christine Palmer. What If…? showed how difficult it is to break an Absolute Point, and may have teased more devastation in X-Men ’97’s upcoming episodes if Cable is successful.
Cable’s X-Men ‘97 Mission Might Bring Even More Devastation
Doctor Strange Breaking An Absolute Point Destroyed His Entire Universe

Doctor Strange Supreme was eventually able to break an Absolute Point and save Christine Palmer’s life in What If…? season 1, episode 4. However, his celebration was short-lived, as the act of breaking this Absolute Point destabilized his entire universe, and led to the destruction of his reality. Strange managed to survive in a pocket universe that he created for himself, but everything he had ever known was obliterated. If this X-Men ’97 theory turns out to be true, and Cable is trying to break an Absolute Point, then his success may lead to the destruction of X-Men ’97’s universe.
The Watcher tends to oversee some of the most tragic events across the MCU’s multiverse, so his appearance in X-Men ’97 episode 5 may have teased this harrowing storyline. While Cable’s mission may reverse the heartbreaking deaths of Magneto and Gambit, this could come with even more dire consequences for the future of X-Men ’97 and its universe. Of course, with several episodes still to release in X-Men ’97 season 1, and season 2 already being developed by Marvel Studios Animation, there must be some way out of this danger, but Cable’s mission may prove more difficult than first expected.
