X-Men ’97: Shocking Creator Ouster Just Days Before Premiere!

As X-Men: The Animated Series is getting to launch its sequel show, X-Men ’97, next week, Marvel Studios has officially fired the series creator.

X-Men ’97 is already going through a shake-up before it has even started as the show’s creator, Beau DeMayo, has been fired by Marvel Studios. While the X-Men reboot is still in the works for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the beloved mutants are making a big come back in the form of X-Men ’97, serving as a continuation of X-Men: The Animated Series. This will mark the first X-Men-produced project by Marvel Studios under their Marvel Animation banner.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Beau DeMayo, who worked for Marvel Studios as the X-Men ’97 creator, has been fired only a week before the show’s big debut on Disney+. DeMayo’s social media accounts have been deactivated and Marvel Studios did not reveal why he was let go, as he was getting ready to do press for the X-Men ’97 TV show this week.

What Beau DeMayo’s Firing Means For X-Men ’97

While it remains to be seen if DeMayo will return to social media to address his firing, this creative shake-up is not going to affect X-Men ’97 season 1. Prior to the show even premiering, Marvel Studios and Disney+ confirmed that X-Men ’97 season 2 had already been greenlit and was in the works. Therefore, DeMayo will only have credit on X-Men ’97 as a writer for the first two seasons while likely maintaining his “Created by” credit in future seasons.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, DeMayo had been tossing around some story ideas with some of his team members about X-Men ’97 season 3. While that doesn’t confirm that X-Men ’97 season 3 has been picked up yet, Disney+ and Marvel Studios are clearly keeping the door open to bring the show back. However, with DeMayo’s firing, a new X-Men ’97 showrunner will have to be hired, as they would also likely have to pitch the executives their ideas for a potential season 3.

Time will tell if Marvel Studios will ever shed more light on DeMayo’s firing, although it is unlikely they will personally unveil more details on what went on behind the scenes. Given how this happened only a week before the series premiere, something drastic must have happened, to say the least. But for now, the Marvel audience can catch the first two episodes of X-Men ’97 season 1 starting on Wednesday, March 20, only on Disney+.
