Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine next to Spider-Man looking surprised in Far From Home

Whatever happened to Wolverine’s universe in Deadpool & Wolverine is still a mystery, but one theory suggests his universe’s fate could be tied to a Spider-Man villain. Anticipation is high as Deadpool and Wolverine’s entrance into the MCU nears. While Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool is the same foul-mouthed gunslinger that audiences know and love, there’s something different about Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. The latest trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine hints that this version of Wolverine comes from a different universe. He doesn’t come from the MCU, and he isn’t the same Wolverine from the Fox X-Men universe.

However, the trailer indicates something terrible happened to Wolverine’s world when Mr. Paradox says, “This Wolverine let down his entire world.” That’s incredibly vague, as Marvel doesn’t want to spoil what happened, but it has led to countless theories about where he comes from and what went wrong. One interesting theory suggests that this could be an adaptation of a classic Wolverine story, and it would connect the famed mutant to a legendary Spider-Man villain.

Mysterio Manipulated Wolverine Into Killing The X-Men According To Theory

Mysterio reveals his true identity in Spider-Man Far From Home

Since Wolverine is joining the MCU, he can interact with all of Marvel’s characters, not just the X-Men. This includes other supervillains he wouldn’t otherwise encounter, including Mysterio, a Spider-Man foe who is a master of illusion. According to a theory shared on Reddit by user CraftingBrosReddit, the fate of Wolverine’s universe in Deadpool & Wolverine could be adapted from the “Old Man Logan” comics storyline where Wolverine has a tragic encounter with Mysterio.

“Old Man Logan” takes place in an alternate future where superheroes have essentially been wiped out, and superheroes have conquered and divided America into territories. In a flashback, it’s revealed that on the night the supervillains attacked the X-Mansion, Mysterio tricked Wolverine into killing all the X-Men, leading Wolverine to run away and retire in shame after the devastating incident. After seeing the trailer, it’s not so far-fetched that this is what occurred, especially since Wolverine doesn’t consider himself a hero. However, there’s one detail that makes this theory less likely.

Marvel Already Adapted The “Old Man Logan” Storyline in Logan

Wolverine pushes Professor X in a wheelchair in Logan

2017’s Logan is an adaptation of the “Old Man Logan” storyline though it does have significant changes. Instead of Marvel villains wiping out the X-Men, the X-Men were killed after one of Professor X’s strokes went out of control. There is also the addition of X-23, who isn’t in the original story. However, another Wolverine who retired after the X-Men’s deaths would feel repetitive, and Marvel wants to keep Logan separate from the events of Deadpool & Wolverine.

Still, a true adaptation of “Old Man Logan” in Deadpool & Wolverine is possible with all the Marvel characters at their disposal, so bringing in Wolverine from this universe would create an opportunity for plenty of amazing cameos. Marvel could bring back villains like Ian McKellen’s Magneto and Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio, without their cameos feeling cheap or gratuitous. Seeing a world controlled by Marvel villains would take advantage of the multiverse concept that audiences want to see Marvel explore, and it would be amazing to see Deadpool and Wolverine fight many of Marvel’s most famous antagonists.
