Who Is Patch? Hugh Jackman’s New Wolverine Variant In Deadpool & Wolverine Explained

Patch in Deadpool and Wolverine

One of the biggest draws for the multiverse is the ability to bring in characters that typically would not be possible from a narrative standpoint, and Deadpool & Wolverine pulled off bringing in a significant number of multiverse characters brilliantly. The MCU struck gold with the film, as Deadpool & Wolverine made over a billion dollars at the box office, and is the highest grossing film for Marvel since Spider-Man: No Way Home. It’s clear that, when properly utilized, the multiverse can be incredibly successful.

Deadpool & Wolverine was overloaded with cameos and Easter eggs, featuring various characters throughout Marvel’s film history. Familiar faces to the Deadpool and Fox X-Men franchise, as Deadpool & Wolverine’s cast saw the return of Colossus, Shatterstar, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Yukio, and even Aaron Stanford’s Pyro, but Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine was the highlight of the film. One of the best scenes in the film featured a montage of various Wolverines, with a variant named Patch, played by Hugh Jackman, making an appearance.

Patch’s Role In Deadpool & Wolverine Explained

Patch's Tuxedo Look in Deadpool & Wolverine Trailer

Deadpool & Wolverine features a scene where Wade Wilson scours the multiverse in search of another Wolverine to be the anchor being in his universe. It’s a hilarious scene that shows a number of Wolverines that recalls various iconic moments throughout the character’s history. Some standouts included a comic accurate height Wolverine and Henry Cavill playing the character, making everyone’s dream fancast come true. Another one that stands out is Patch, the tuxedo wearing Wolverine variant played by Hugh Jackman.

Patch is seen playing a game of poker as Deadpool walks up behind him, calling to him. When the montage cuts back to the scene with Patch, he stabs Deadpool through the back of the head before throwing him down to the ground unbothered and seemingly ready to get back to his game of Poker. Patch doesn’t get anything to say in his Deadpool & Wolverine appearance, but he certainly left his mark alongside other memorable variants of the character.

Wolverine Variant Patch Marvel Comics History Explained

Patch after a bar brawl in Marvel Comics

In Marvel Comics, Patch is an alias used by Wolverine while operating on the fictional island of Madripoor. He originally adopted the identity to operate as a vigilante hero while the X-Men were in hiding back in 1988. Disguised with a smart white jacket and eye-patch, Wolverine was able to hide among the locals of Madripoor, who only ever knew him as Patch. Patch gambled, drank, and investigated crimes in Madripoor, with his disguise allowing him to keep a low-profile and not get the X-Men involved in his activities.

Patch is only one of many aliases adopted by Wolverine in Marvel Comics – even Logan is a false name that he adopted while working at a mining colony in the Yukon.

In his more recent Marvel Comics series, penned by original author Larry Hama, Patch teams up with his new friend, Archie, for what seems to be a simple recon mission. However, this soon turns into a major paramilitary operation, with Wolverine’s Patch engaging in several battles in the jungles of Madripoor against villainous mutants. Patch didn’t play a significant role in the comics until that self-titled run in 2022. However, each time he returned to Madripoor in the comics, Wolverine sported the eye-patch and jacket and became Patch once again.

Patch’s Connection To MCU Location Madripoor Explained

Wolverine's Patch in Madripoor in Marvel Comics

Wolverine only operates as Patch while in Madripoor, a fictional island depicted as being located off the coast of Southeast Asia in Marvel Comics. Madripoor is a prominent location in X-Men storylines in Marvel Comics, as all manner of mutants live and work in Madripoor. The island nation’s capital city is also named Madripoor, and is split into two halves: Hightown and Lowton. Hightown houses wealthy citizens, while Lowtown is the criminal underbelly. This juxtaposition makes it the perfect place for Patch to carry out his vigilante justice, and the perfect place to hide from the rest of the world.

Madripoor was recently introduced into the MCU, as Baron Zemo brought Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes to the fictional nation during 2021’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. While Wolverine didn’t make an appearance until the MCU’s Phase 5, the fact that Madripoor has been confirmed to exist, and that the Hightown and Lowtown contrasts have been pre-established in the MCU, this means that Wolverine – or Patch – could still be part of the MCU whenever the universe decides to finally bring the X-Men into the fold along with the actual Wolverine from the sacred timeline.
