What You Didn’t See in The Summer I Turned Pretty: Blake’s Surprising Role & Jeremiah’s Date Exposed

In the latest episode of The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2, Jeremiah mentions that he went to homecoming with someone named Blake, raising questions about who this character is and whether they actually exist in The Summer I Turned Pretty source material. Written by Jenny Han, The Summer I Turned Pretty originated as a series of three young adult romance novels, and in 2022, was adapted to television. The series is a romantic drama following Belly, a young woman who must choose between the brooding boy she’s loved since childhood or her much kinder best friend, who also happens to be her crush’s brother.

The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 has heavily explored the particulars of the relationships between Conrad, Belly, and Jeremiah. The start of the season sees Jeremiah deeply upset when he discovers that Conrad and Belly may start a relationship after Jeremiah kissed Belly earlier in the summer. In fact, these hurt feelings last, as episode 5 shows Jeremiah and Conrad’s strained relationship during the fall, and the moment when Jeremiah allows Conrad to date Belly, despite his own feelings. This scene, while emotional, includes one interesting reference that many audiences can’t seem to move on from: Jeremiah’s homecoming date, Blake.

Blake Wasn’t In The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 1 Or The Books

Although Jeremiah tells Conrad that he went to homecoming with Blake, this character does not appear in The Summer I Turned Pretty season 1 or any of the original books. So far, this makes Blake nothing more than a mysterious, unseen character. Naturally, this makes viewers wonder who Blake is and what their role is in the series. Namely, many want to know whether Blake is simply a name that means nothing for the future of the show, or if this character will physically manifest later in The Summer I Turned Pretty. Also, if Blake does appear, will this character offer insight into Jeremiah’s unclear dating history?

Thus far, not much is actually known about Jeremiah’s past relationships. While The Summer I Turned Pretty season 1 revealed that Jeremiah is bisexual, he has mostly been painted as someone that has flings, but doesn’t, or hasn’t yet, settled permanently on someone. In this way, Blake joining The Summer I Turned Pretty cast could change Jeremiah’s entire character by providing context to his character and past. More than anything, this would be a beneficial change because it would allow Jeremiah to have the same amount of development as Conrad, and would allow Belly to get to know him on a more intimate level.

The Summer I Turned Pretty’s Homecoming Mystery Means Blake Must Appear In Season 2

While Blake could be nothing more than a throwaway name, their mention invites the character to be introduced in The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2. Mainly, this is because of how much speculation the reference raises, especially since Blake is a more gender-neutral name. Ultimately, viewers need to know who Blake is and what their connection to Jeremiah is. Ideally, Blake must be introduced in The Summer I Turned Pretty, or at the very least, appear in a season 2 timeline jump to clear up the situation. Exploring Jeremiah’s love life outside of Belly would be ideal, and Blake is the perfect vessel to do this.
